도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 29일(현지시간) 오는 7월 8일 종료되는 상호관세 유예 시한에 대해 "아주 간단하다. 우리는 편지를 보낼 것이며 나는 지금 하는 게 더 나을 것 같다"며 "우리가 할 일은 모든 국가에 서한을 보내는 것"이라고 밝혔다.
미 '폭스 뉴스'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 공개된 '폭스'와의 인터뷰에서 '상호관세 유예 시한이 다가오고 있는데 어떻게 할 계획인가'란 질의에 이같이 답했다.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 지난 4월 2일 무역 상대국별 상호관세를 효력 발생일인 같은 달 9일 90일간 유예를 발표한 가운데 그 후 미국은 국가별로 무역협상을 진행하고 있다.
그러면서 "무역협상 대상 200개국과 모두 협상할 순 없다"며 "(향후 보낼 관세 관련 서한이) 무역 협상 끝"이라고 했다.
또 현재 협상이 진행 중인 일본 관련해서도 "서한을 보낼 수 있다"며 "일본이 미국산 자동차를 많이 수입 않는 대신 미국은 수백만 대 일본 차를 수입하고 있다"고 지적했다.
이어 "그건 불공평하며 나는 그것을 설명하고 일본은 그걸 이해한다"며 "우리는 일본과 큰 무역적자를 갖고 있고, 그들은 이해한다"고 했다.
더불어 "현재 우리는 석유가 있으며 그들은 많은 석유와 다른 것들을 수입할 수 있을 것이나 기본적으로 지금 당장 해야 한다고 생각한다"며 "모든 국가에 편지를 보내 우리가 가진 무역적자나 어떤 문제든 살펴보겠다 설명하는 것"이라고 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 "만나지 않아도 된다"며 "우리가 할 일은 서한을 보내 '축하한다. 미국에서 살 수 있도록 허용하지만 25%·35%·50% 또는 10% 관세를 부과할 것'이라고 말하는 것"이라고 했다.
또 '일본·한국이 미국 자동차 업체보다 낮은 관세를 적용받는 협정을 체결할 수 있다고 우려한다'란 질의 관련해선 "미 자동차 업체들은 미국서 차량을 파는 일에 너무 바빠 그 문제를 걱정할 필요 없을 것"이라며 "그러나 그런 일은 일어나지 않을 것"이라고 했다.
그러면서 최근 중국계 동영상 플랫폼 '틱톡'의 미국 내 사업권 매각 시한이 오는 9월 17일까지 재 연장된 것에 대해 "틱톡을 살 사람이 있으며 매우 부유한 사람들, 부유한 사람들 그룹"이라며 "중국 정부 승인이 필요할 것 같고, 시진핑(중국 국가주석)이 그렇게 할 것이며 약 2주 후 말해주겠다"고 했다.
