[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] ‘2025 월드 스마트시티 엑스포가 ‘Next City for All’을 슬로건으로 15일 부산 벡스코에서 개막했다.
이번 행사는 국토교통부와 과학기술정보통신부가 공동 주최하며, 부산광역시(2025 K-ICT WEEK in BUSAN)와 함께하는 첫 번째 엑스포다.
아시아 태평양 지역을 대표하는 스마트시티 행사인 월드 스마트시티 엑스포는 2017년 시작돼 올해로 9회째를 맞이했다. 이번 행사는 오는 17일까지 3일간 열리며, 인공지능(AI)을 비롯한 첨단 기술이 도시 서비스와 삶의 질에 가져올 변화를 조명하고, 모두를 포용하는 도시 비전을 제시하는 데 중점을 둔다.
개막식에는 UAE 아부다비 자치행정교통부 모하마드 알리 알 쇼라파 의장이 축사를 전했으며, IBM의 폴 지코폴로스 부사장이 AI 기반 도시 혁신에 대해, UCLA 데니스 홍 교수가 시각장애인 운전 기술을 중심으로 포용 도시 비전을 주제로 각각 기조연설을 진행했다.
올해 전시에는 국내외 277개 기관이 참가해 모빌리티, 에너지, 헬스케어 등 스마트시티 주요 분야의 기술을 소개한다. 부산시는 ‘그린 스마트도시’를 주제로 에코델타시티, 디지털트윈, 자율주행버스 등 자체 사업 성과를 집중 홍보하고 있다.

총 35개의 콘퍼런스가 함께 열리며, ‘WSCE 리더스 포럼’에는 박형준 부산시장을 비롯해 태국, 필리핀, 말레이시아 주요 도시 대표와 LG사이언스파크, 현대차, TONOMUS(사우디 네옴시티 참여기업), 하이티(UAE 투자기업) 등이 참석해 글로벌 협력 방안을 논의한다.
또한, ‘Urban AI’, ‘자율주행·로봇’, ‘해외 스마트시티 사업’ 등 세 가지 특별 콘퍼런스에서는 미래 도시 기술 트렌드를 심도 있게 다룬다. 이외에도 수소도시, 탄소중립, 스마트+빌딩 등 주제별 세션과 국내 학계·연구기관의 포럼이 병행된다.
기업의 해외 진출을 지원하는 비즈니스 프로그램도 운영된다. 해외 바이어 23개국 60개사, 국내 바이어 30개사가 참여한 1:1 상담, 대한항공·카카오모빌리티가 함께하는 오픈 이노베이션 프로그램, 하이티 및 베트남싱가포르공단과의 비즈니스 밋업 등이 포함된다.
국토교통부 이상주 국토도시실장은 “AI 기반 기술 혁신은 스마트시티를 새롭게 정의할 전환점”이라며, “이번 엑스포가 ‘AI시티’로 나아갈 방향을 모색하는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.

2025 World Smart City Expo Kicks Off in Busan, Exploring the Future of AI-Driven Cities
The 2025 World Smart City Expo, themed “Next City for All,” officially opened today, July 15, at BEXCO in Busan. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT, the event is being held in partnership with the City of Busan for the first time.
Celebrating its 9th edition since its launch in 2017, the World Smart City Expo is the premier smart city event in the Asia-Pacific region. The three-day event runs until July 17 and focuses on how technological innovations, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming urban services and inclusive city development.
The opening ceremony featured a keynote address by H.E. Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport of Abu Dhabi. This was followed by speeches from Paul Zikopoulos, VP of IBM, on AI-powered urban innovation, and Dr. Dennis Hong of UCLA, who presented a vision of inclusive cities through his project on self-driving technology for the visually impaired.
The exhibition showcases cutting-edge solutions from 277 organizations across mobility, energy, healthcare, infrastructure, and more. The City of Busan, under its vision of a “Green Smart City,” is promoting its flagship projects including the Eco Delta Smart City, Digital Twin pilot, and Osiria autonomous shuttle.
A total of 35 conferences are taking place during the event. The flagship WSCE Leaders Forum brings together city leaders from Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia, along with executives from LG Science Park, Hyundai Motor Group, Saudi Arabia’s TONOMUS, and UAE’s investment firm HiTi.
Three thematic conferences--on Urban AI, Autonomous Technologies & Robotics, and Global Smart City Projects--explore the latest trends and international cooperation in urban innovation. Additional sessions cover hydrogen cities, carbon neutrality, and smart buildings, with participation from leading Korean institutions such as Seoul National University and Busan National University.
To support business collaboration, 1:1 meetings between 60 international and 30 domestic buyers and startups are being held. Open innovation sessions with Korean Air and Kakao Mobility, as well as business meetups with HiTi and VSIP, further promote global networking opportunities.
Lee Sang-joo, Director General of Urban Policy at MOLIT, stated, “AI-driven innovation is redefining what a smart city means. This event is a chance to explore the next step toward AI Cities.”
Jung Na-young, Director of Future Technology Strategy at the City of Busan, added, “This Expo is a valuable opportunity to showcase Busan’s smart city achievements to the world.”
