[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 세계적인 기후과학자 악셀 팀머만(Axel Timmermann) 기초과학연구원(IBS) 기후물리연구단장을 ‘부산시 명예시민’으로 선정했다.
시는 18일 오전 11시 시청 국제의전실에서 박형준 시장 주재로 명예시민증 수여식을 열고, 팀머만 단장이 부산의 기후연구 역량 제고와 후학 양성에 기여한 공로를 공식적으로 인정했다.
부산시는 “세계 최고 수준의 국제 연구환경을 조성하고, 부산의 기후변화 연구 수준을 세계적인 반열로 끌어올리는 데 기여한 점을 높이 평가해 명예시민으로 선정했다”고 밝혔다.
악셀 팀머만 단장은 기후과학 분야의 세계적 권위자로, 지난 2017년부터 부산대학교 석학교수이자 IBS 기후물리연구단장으로 재직하며 기후변화 및 해수면 상승 예측 분야에서 선도적인 연구를 수행해왔다.
특히 2018년부터 7년 연속 ‘세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 연구자(Highly Cited Researchers)’에 이름을 올렸으며, 지금까지 340편이 넘는 국제 학술 논문을 발표하며 국내외 학계에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다.
더불어 그는 연구에만 머물지 않고, 부산지역과 전국의 청소년을 대상으로 기후변화와 관련된 강연을 활발히 펼치는 등 학문적 사회 환원에도 힘써왔다. 이 같은 공로는 부산을 중심으로 한 국내 기후연구 저변 확대와 인재 양성에 중요한 기폭제 역할을 해온 것으로 평가된다.
박형준 시장은 “부산에서 세계적인 수준의 기후과학 연구가 지속되고 있다는 점에서 이번 수여는 더 큰 의미가 있다”며, “앞으로도 지역 인재 육성과 대학 역량 강화, 지산학(지역-산업-학계) 협력에 지속적인 관심과 참여를 부탁드린다”고 말했다. 이어 “부산이 기후과학 분야의 세계적인 메카로 도약할 수 있도록 오래도록 부산에 머물며 연구해주시길 바란다”고 당부했다.
한편, 부산시는 지난 1966년부터 도시의 위상을 높이고 지역 발전에 이바지한 국내외 인사를 ‘명예시민’으로 선정하고 있다. 지금까지 총 282명이 명예시민에 이름을 올렸으며, 최근에는 닐 코프로스키 주한미해군사령관(2024년 5월)이 선정된 바 있다. 주요 명예시민으로는 전 국가대표 축구감독 거스 히딩크(2003), 미국 여자프로골프(LPGA) 선수 다니엘 강(2019), 아카데미 4관왕 수상작 기생충의 영어자막 번역가 달시 파켓(2020) 등이 있다

World-Renowned Climate Scientist Axel Timmermann Named Honorary Citizen of Busan
The City of Busan has named Dr. Axel Timmermann, Director of the Center for Climate Physics at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) and Distinguished Professor at Pusan National University, an Honorary Citizen of Busan. The honorary citizenship was formally conferred at a ceremony held on July 18 at 11 a.m. in the city's International Protocol Room, with Mayor Park Heong-joon presiding.
The city recognized Dr. Timmermann's outstanding contributions to elevating Busan's climate research capabilities to a global standard and for cultivating future generations of scientists. His designation as an honorary citizen acknowledges his pivotal role in creating a world-class international research environment in Busan.
Dr. Timmermann is a leading authority in the field of climate science. Since his appointment in 2017 as Director of IBS’s Climate Physics Research Center and Distinguished Professor at Pusan National University, he has spearheaded pioneering research on climate change and sea level rise. Notably, he has been named one of the "Highly Cited Researchers" for seven consecutive years since 2018, and has published more than 340 scientific papers in international journals, significantly advancing both domestic and global climate research.
Beyond academia, Dr. Timmermann has also actively engaged with the public, delivering climate-related lectures to young students in Busan and across the country. His efforts have been instrumental in expanding the foundation for climate science and nurturing young talent in South Korea.
At the ceremony, Mayor Park congratulated Dr. Timmermann and expressed his appreciation:
"Having world-class climate research being conducted in Busan is of great significance. I hope you will continue to conduct your work here, helping foster local talent and strengthen our universities. Since 1966, the City of Busan has honored individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the city’s development and international reputation by naming them honorary citizens. A total of 282 individuals have received the distinction to date, including U.S. Navy Commander Neil Koprowski in May 2024. Other notable honorary citizens include former national soccer team coach Guus Hiddink (2003), LPGA golfer Danielle Kang (2019), and Darcy Paquet, translator of the Academy Award-winning film Parasite (2020).
