[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 전 세계 성평등 실현에 앞장서온 유엔여성기구(UN WOMEN)와 광고계의 산증인 유정근 삼성라이온즈 대표가 ‘2025 부산국제마케팅광고제(MAD STARS 2025)’ 특별상 수상자로 선정됐다.
올해 특별상은 ‘국제명예상’과 ‘공로상’ 두 부문으로 나뉘어 수여되며, MAD STARS는 매년 광고·마케팅 분야뿐 아니라 사회 전반에 긍정적인 변화를 만들어낸 개인 및 단체를 선정해 이 상을 수여해왔다.
성평등 메시지를 세계로 확산한 UN WOMEN
국제명예상 수상자인 유엔여성기구는 2011년 출범한 UN 산하 기구로, 여성과 소녀의 권리 신장을 위한 제도 개선과 사회 인식 변화에 앞장서 왔다. 특히 2022년에는 여성가족부와 협력해 서울에 아시아태평양 지역의 성평등 거점인 ‘유엔여성기구 지식·파트너십 센터’를 설립하며, 한국을 포함한 아시아 지역에서 성평등 확산을 이끌고 있다.
UN WOMEN은 2024년에도 강한 인상을 남긴 바 있다. 아랍에미리트의 광고회사 임팩트 BBDO와 함께 제작한 ‘Child Wedding Cards(어린이 청첩장)’ 캠페인으로 MAD STARS의 최고 영예인 PSA 그룹 부문 ‘올해의 그랑프리(Grand Prix of the Year)’를 수상한 것이다.
이 캠페인은 파키스탄에서 매년 약 1,900만 건에 달하는 조혼 문제에 대응하기 위해 기획됐다. 5세에서 15세 사이 소녀들이 그린 그림을 바탕으로 가상의 결혼 청첩장을 제작, 이를 파키스탄 국회의원들에게 발송함으로써 조혼 반대와 법 개정을 호소했다. 그 결과, 남녀 모두의 최소 결혼 연령을 18세로 규정하는 법안이 연방 이슬람 법원을 통해 통과됐다.
UN WOMEN은 광고와 커뮤니케이션의 사회적 역할을 창의적으로 해석하고 실천해낸 공로로 올해 국제명예상의 주인공이 됐다.
광고계 35년 외길, 유정근 대표의 공로
공로상은 광고 산업 현장에서 35년 이상 헌신해온 유정근 삼성라이온즈 대표에게 돌아갔다. 유 대표는 1987년 제일기획에 입사한 이후 ‘애니콜’, ‘오비맥주’, ‘KT’, ‘삼성카드’ 등 수많은 굵직한 캠페인을 주도하며 국내 광고산업의 한 축을 이끌었다.

2004년에는 제일기획의 최고 전문가에게만 수여되는 ‘마스터’로 선정됐고, 이후 여러 조직의 리더로서 전략 캠페인을 진두지휘했다. 2017년 제일기획 대표이사 사장으로 취임한 뒤에는 2022년까지 회사의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화를 이끌었으며, 창의적 기업 문화를 조성하는 데에도 중요한 역할을 했다.
이후 제일기획 이사회 의장을 맡아 지속 성장 전략과 경영 투명성을 강화했으며, 2023년부터는 삼성라이온즈 대표이사로 자리를 옮겨 스포츠 마케팅 역량을 바탕으로 팬과의 소통 강화 및 구단 경쟁력 제고에 집중하고 있다. MAD STARS는 오랜 시간 광고산업의 발전에 기여하고, 글로벌 무대에서 국내 광고계의 위상을 높인 그의 공로를 높이 평가해 공로상을 수여하기로 했다.
“광고의 힘, 사회를 바꾸는 원동력”
MAD STARS 2025의 최환진 공동집행위원장은 “특별상은 광고·마케팅 분야를 넘어 사회 전반에 지속 가능한 선한 영향력을 미친 인물과 단체에게 수여하는 상”이라며, “올해 수상자들은 창의적인 커뮤니케이션이 사회 변화와 산업 혁신을 이끄는 강력한 도구가 될 수 있음을 잘 보여준다”고 밝혔다.
한편, MAD STARS 2025 개막식과 특별상 시상식은 오는 8월 27일(수) 부산 시그니엘 호텔에서 열린다. 올해 광고제는 8월 27일부터 29일까지 해운대 일원에서 개최되며, 세미나, 시상식, 네트워킹 프로그램 등이 함께 진행될 예정이다.

UN Women, the global organization dedicated to gender equality, and Yoo Jung-geun, CEO of Samsung Lions and former president of Cheil Worldwide, have been selected as recipients of special honors at the 2025 Busan International Marketing & Advertising Festival (MAD STARS 2025).
Each year, MAD STARS recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a lasting impact in the advertising and marketing industries and beyond. For 2025, the International Honorary Award goes to UN Women, while the Achievement Award will be presented to Yoo Jung-geun.
▲ International Honorary Award: UN WOMEN
Founded in 2011, UN Women is a United Nations entity that has led efforts to eliminate gender-based inequality and empower women and girls globally. In 2022, it partnered with Korea’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to establish the Knowledge and Partnership Center for Gender Equality in Seoul, which now serves as a regional hub for the Asia-Pacific.
UN Women has also played a significant role in leveraging creative communication for advocacy. In 2024, the organization worked with UAE-based agency IMPACT BBDO to launch the impactful “Child Wedding Cards” campaign, which was awarded Grand Prix of the Year in the Public Service Advertising (PSA) category at MAD STARS.
The campaign addressed the issue of child marriage in Pakistan, where nearly 19 million girls under the age of 18 are forced into early marriage. It featured fictional wedding invitations illustrated by girls aged 5 to 15, sent directly to members of parliament to urge legislative reform. The campaign led to the passage of a new law by the Federal Shariat Court setting the legal marriage age for both men and women at 18.
For its bold approach in redefining the social role of advertising and effectively driving change through creativity, UN Women is being honored with the International Honorary Award.
▲ Achievement Award: Yoo Jung-geun, CEO of Samsung Lions
Yoo Jung-geun, recipient of the Achievement Award, has spent more than 35 years at the forefront of Korea’s advertising industry. Joining Cheil Worldwide in 1987, he led major campaigns for brands such as Anycall, OB Beer, KT, and Samsung Card, and was named a “Master” in 2004--an internal honor recognizing top-tier professionals at the company.
He went on to hold several leadership roles within Cheil, including Group Head of Anycall, Head of The SOUTH Company (Korea Division), and Head of Solution and Business Divisions. In 2017, he became President and CEO of Cheil Worldwide, leading the company until 2022 while enhancing its global competitiveness and cultivating a creative corporate culture.
In December 2022, Yoo was appointed Chairman of the Board at Cheil, where he worked to improve long-term growth and management transparency. Since January 2023, he has been serving as CEO and owner of the Samsung Lions, applying his expertise in sports marketing to strengthen the club’s brand and fan engagement.
His dedication to elevating Korea’s advertising industry, fostering creative talent, and promoting its global presence has earned him this year's Achievement Award.

Choi Hwan-jin, Co-Chair of MAD STARS, stated, “The International Honorary Award and Achievement Award are given to individuals and organizations whose influence extends far beyond the marketing industry and contributes positively to society as a whole. This year’s honorees clearly demonstrate how creative communication can drive social transformation and industry innovation.”
The special award ceremony will take place during the MAD STARS 2025 opening night on Wednesday, August 27 at the Signiel Busan Hotel.
