이번 대회는 영덕군에서는 처음 열리는 산악마라톤 대회로, 세계지질공원에 포함된 지질 명소는 물론, 산과 바다가 어우러진 영덕 블루로드의 수려한 절경을 만끽할 수 있어 마니아들로부터 큰 기대를 받고 있다.
특히, ‘희망 레이스’라는 부제답게 지난 3월 말 발생한 경북산불로 큰 피해를 본 지역사회에 재건을 응원하는 희망의 메시지를 담고 있어 더욱 뜻깊은 대회라 할 수 있다.
이번 대회는 러닝 초보자부터 마니아까지 함께할 수 있도록 3개 부분인 6.5km, 14.5km, 23km로 나뉘어 있으며, 참가비는 각각 2만 원, 5만 원, 10만 원이다.
다만, 23km 코스의 경우는 참가비 전액을 ‘고향사랑기부제’의 기부금과 연계해 참가자들이 지역발전에 이바지하면서 세액공제 혜택도 받을 수 있도록 했으며, 6.5km와 14.5km 코스는 참가비 전액을 영덕사랑상품권으로 환급해 참가자들의 지역 소비를 촉진해 경제 활성화 효과까지 더했다.
대회 코스는 영덕 블루로드 8개 코스 중 5코스 ‘목은 사색의 길’과 6코스 ‘관어대 5경’이 활용되는데, 6코스는 탁 트인 동해와 명사 20리 모래사장, 송천강과 영해·병곡 평야, 그리고 칠보산을 한눈에 조망할 수 있어 영덕군의 빼어난 다섯 가지 풍경을 한꺼번에 즐길 수 있는 특별한 구간이다.
대회 참가자 350명은 일찍이 참가 신청을 마친 상황으로, 영덕군은 이번 대회의 높은 호응을 반영해 매년 행사를 확대해 하절기를 대표하는 지역 스포츠 축제로 성장시켜 나갈 계획이다.
김광열 영덕군수는 “이번 대회가 산불 극복에 힘써온 지역사회에 희망의 메시지를 전하고 참가자들에겐 삶의 열정과 도전의 계기가 되길 바란다”며, “트레일런 대회를 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 지역을 알리는 콘텐츠이자 관광·문화와 연계한 지역의 새로운 자산으로 자리 잡도록 대회 발전과 운영에 최선을 다하겠다”라고 전했다.

Yeongdeok County to Host First "Hope Race" Trail Run on Blue Road
Yeongdeok County will host the "Yeongdeok Blue Road & Korea Trail Trail Run: Hope Race" on the 13th along the Blue Road, one of the nation's premier trekking destinations.
This race, the first of its kind in Yeongdeok County, is highly anticipated by mountain marathon enthusiasts, as it offers a chance to experience not only the geological sites designated as Global Geoparks but also the breathtaking scenery of Yeongdeok Blue Road, a blend of mountains and sea.
The race is particularly meaningful as, as its subtitle, "Hope Race," suggests, it carries a message of hope and encourages the rebuilding of the local community devastated by the Gyeongbuk wildfires in late March.
The race is divided into three sections: 6.5km, 14.5km, and 23km, designed to appeal to everyone from beginners to seasoned runners. Entry fees are 20,000 won, 50,000 won, and 100,000 won, respectively.
However, for the 23km course, the entire entry fee is linked to a donation to the "Hometown Love Donation System," allowing participants to contribute to local development and receive tax deductions. For the 6.5km and 14.5km courses, the entire entry fee is refunded in the form of Yeongdeok Love Gift Certificates, encouraging local consumption and further stimulating the economy.
The race course utilizes Course 5, "Mok-eun Sasik-ui-gil" (Road of Reflection), and Course 6, "Gwaneo-dae Five Views," two of the eight Yeongdeok Blue Road courses. Course 6 offers panoramic views of the East Sea, Myeongsa 20-ri (16.5-mile) sandy beach, Songcheon River, Yeonghae and Byeonggok Plains, and Chilbosan Mountain, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy five breathtaking landscapes of Yeongdeok County all at once.
The 350 participants have already registered for the event, and Yeongdeok County plans to expand the event annually, capitalizing on the event's strong response and developing it into a regional sports festival representing the summer season.
Yeongdeok County Governor Kim Gwang-yeol said, “I hope that this competition will deliver a message of hope to the local community that has been working hard to overcome the forest fire, and that it will become an opportunity for participants to find passion and challenge in life,” and added, “I will do my best to develop and operate the trail run competition so that it goes beyond a simple sport and becomes content that promotes the region and a new regional asset linked to tourism and culture.”
