저는 올챙이 기자시절에 3년여 간(1979-1981년) 대한불교 조계종의 출입기자를 한 적이 있습니다. 이 때, 대학과정은 아니지만 취재과정에서 많은 스님들로부터 직접 지도를 받을 수 있었습니다. 이때 김탄허-무진장-강석주 스님 등도 자주 만났었습니다. 불교에 대해 많은 공부를 하게 됐습니다. 이 때, 불교를 이해(理解)하는 폭이 넓어졌다고 할 수 있습니다.
불교문화에 대해서, 늘 친근한 느낌을 가지고 살아왔습니다. 오고가며, 눈에 보이는, 돌부처=석불(石佛)을 모아 사무실 입구에 배치해왔습니다. 물론 십자가 조각도 함께 배치해 놓았습니다.
지난 9월3일, 이색적인 석불(石佛) 하나를 사무실 계단에 배치했습니다. 풍물시장의 '동보'라는 가게의 정하민 사장께서 준 것인데. 총(銃)에 맞은 석불(키 1m)입니다.
총알이 석불의 가슴과 다리 귀 부분을 관통(貫通)했습니다. 이 때문인지 두 손도 사라져 버렸습니다. 두 팔이 없는 석불입니다.
필경, 전쟁 때, 상호의 총격전에 노출된 석불(石佛)인 듯합니다.
전쟁은 사람을 상처 나게 하거나 죽게 하지만, 석불도 마찬가지인 듯합니다.
이 석불은 전쟁의 무서움을 증명해주고 있습니다. 평화의 중요함을 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 총에 맞은 석불의 뒤로 우리나라 경찰청 청사가 보입니다. 경찰 청사에도 평화가 함께 하길 기원합니다.
총알 맞은 이 돌부처가, 어찌하여 나에게 왔는지를? 묵상(默想)합니다~.
[후기]노병한 박사께서 제 글을 읽고 “돌부처에 양 손이 없다는 것은 무욕심(無慾心)을 의미한다”고 정의해주었습니다, 그리고 제가 브레이크뉴스 오너(사주)인데 “돌부처에게 귀가 하나 더 뚫려 있다는 것은 중생(민중)의 소리를 더 듣는 신문사가 되어, 꼭 성공하라”는 뜻이라고 설명해주었습니다.

총알이 빗발치던 전장(戰場)에서
사람들이 죽어갔다.
이때, 난장(亂場)에 서 있던
돌부처도 온몸에 총알 맞아 총알구멍 숭숭
총알이 석불 귀 볼에 구멍을 뚫었고
가슴도 관통했다
총알이 왼쪽 다리도 뚫고 지나갔다.
자비를 베풀라던, 아름다운 모양을 한
두 팔도 어디론가 날아가 버렸다.
사람이라면, 생명이 다했을 터인데
총알 맞은 돌부처 은은한 미소마저 그대로
총알 맞고도 존재하는 돌부처 왈
“쯧쯧, 어리석도다 인간들아
내가 사람이었다면, 이미 죽은 목숨이었겠지,

While not a university student, I was able to receive direct guidance from many monks during my reporting. During this time, I frequently met monks like Kim Tan-heo, Mujinjang, and Kang Seok-ju. I learned a great deal about Buddhism. It's safe to say my understanding of Buddhism broadened during this time.
I've always felt a sense of affinity for Buddhist culture. I've collected stone Buddhas (stone Buddhas) that I've seen in my travels and placed them at the entrance to my office. Of course, I also placed a cross sculpture there. On September 3rd, I placed an unusual stone Buddha on the steps of my office. It was a gift from Jeong Ha-min, the owner of a store called "Dongbo" in the Pungmul Market. It's a 1-meter-tall stone Buddha that was shot.
The bullets pierced the Buddha's chest, legs, and ears. Perhaps because of this, both hands were missing. It's a stone Buddha without arms.
It seems this stone Buddha was exposed to gunfire during the war.

In the battlefield, where bullets were flying,
people were dying.
At that time, the stone Buddha, standing amidst the chaos, was riddled with bullet holes all over its body.
The bullet pierced the stone Buddha's ear,
and also pierced its chest.
The bullet also passed through its left leg.
Even the beautiful arms that were meant to be merciful have flown away.
If he were a human, his life would be over,
but the bullet-hit stone Buddha, even its gentle smile remains.
The stone Buddha, still alive despite being shot, says,
"Tsk, tsk, how foolish you humans are.
If I were a human, I'd already be dead.
