파주시가 지난 1일 임진각 장단·사천강 전승기념비 앞에서 '제73주년 장단·사천강 전투 전승기념식'을 성황리에 개최했다.
해병대파주시전우회와 해병대사령부가 공동 주관한 이번 행사에는 참전용사 50여 명을 비롯해 해병대전우회 회원, 시민 등 총 300여 명이 참석해 자리를 빛냈다.

기념식은 오전 도라산 평화공원 내 해병대 파로비에서 거행된 전사자 추모식을 시작으로, 임진각으로 이동해 전승 기념식 순으로 진행됐다.
참석자들은 호국영령들의 넋을 기리며 자유와 평화의 소중함을 되새기는 시간을 가졌다.
'장단·사천강 지구 전투'는 6·25전쟁 당시 해병대의 대표적인 전투로 꼽힌다.
판문점에서 임진강 하구에 이르는 지역에서 불과 5,000여 명의 병력으로 중국군 4만 2,000여 명의 4차례에 걸친 공격을 모두 격퇴하며, 수도권 및 파주 일대를 성공적으로 방어한 역사적 전투다.
전진광 해병대파주시전우회장은 "해병대 선배님들의 불굴의 투지와 고귀한 희생으로 오늘의 우리가 있을 수 있음에 늘 감사드린다"며 "해병대파주시전우회는 선배들의 값진 희생이 헛되지 않도록 앞으로도 지속적인 봉사와 나눔 활동을 이어가겠다"고 다짐했다.
이성근 파주시 행정안전국장은 "나라를 지키신 호국영령들의 숭고한 희생과 헌신에 감사드린다"며 "이번 행사를 통해 시민 모두가 그 뜻을 가슴에 새길 수 있길 바란다"고 말했다.
