센터는 이를 위해 지난달 2일 충북농업기술원과 통통 마늘 종구 생산을 위한 통상 실시 계약을 체결하고 660㎡ 규모의 채종포를 조성했다.
‘통통’마늘은 쪽수가 4~6개로 적고 알이 15g 이상으로 크며 외통마늘 생산성이 우수한 것이 특징이다.
외통마늘은 색이 뽀얗고 모양이 고르며 특히 껍질 벗기는 것이 수월하고 맛이 좋다는 평가를 받고 있어 소비자 선호가 높을 것으로 보인다.
농업기술센터는 10월 하순 종구 생산을 위한 마늘 정식을 완료했으며, 내년 6월 중순경 종구를 수확해 지역 농가에 본격 보급할 계획이다.
또 재배 초기 단계부터 생육 모니터링과 현장 기술지원을 강화해 농가의 안정적인 재배 기반을 마련하고, 품질 균일화를 통한 마늘 브랜드 육성 가능성도 함께 모색할 방침이다.
센터 관계자는 “통통마늘은 맛과 외형 모두 뛰어난 신품종 마늘로 우리 군의 새로운 소득작목으로 성장할 잠재력이 크다”며 “종구 보급 확대와 지속적인 기술지원으로 안정적인 재배와 농가 소득 증대를 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 전했다.
