지난 11월 29일(토) 오후 5시, 국립국악원 예악당에서 사단법인 아악일무보존회가 주최·주관한 팔풍 (八風)의 몸짓, 일무(佾舞) 공연이 열렸다. 그날 무대를 채우던 장엄한 기운이 아직도 가슴에 잔향으로 남아 있어, 다시 자료와 기록을 펼쳐 들었다.
한덕택 서울예대 겸임교수의 간결하면서도 귀에 쏙 들어오는 해설을 앞세워 막이 오른 공연은 장관이었다. 무대를 가득 메운 종묘제례 일무(佾舞) 이수자와 전수자 64인이 펼쳐낸 일사불란한 동작은 오랜 역사를 건너온 우주의 조화와 통치의 질서가 인간의 몸짓 속에 오롯하게 스며 있는 광경 그 자체였다.
국가무형유산위원회 위원장을 지내신 서연호 고려대학교 명예교수는 축사에서 “종묘제례 일무(보태평·정대업) 전장은 2009년 이후 소규모 실연으로 9차례 발표된 바 있으나, 팔일무(八佾舞) 완전체인 64인 전장 공연은 이번이 처음”이라며 역사적 규범을 온전히 복원한 귀중한 무대라고 강조하였다.
그는 이어 “문무와 무무가 이루는 음양의 조화, 그리고 64인이 만들어내는 질서의 미학은 고전무용의 정수가 담긴 중요한 예술적 가치이며, 이번 전장 재현은 이러한 전통을 온전하게 이어가는 소중한 이정표”라고 평가하였다.
또한 국악방송 사장을 지낸 송혜진 숙명여대 교수는 이번 무대를 일무(佾舞)의 전형을 되살리는 역사적 실천으로 평가하며, 지난 10여 년간 꾸준히 전장을 이어온 (사)아악일무보존회의 헌신과 전승 의지에 깊은 경의를 표했다. 그는 특히 김영숙 전승 교육사를 중심으로 세대를 건너 이어온 몸의 기억과 정신의 전통이 이번 64인 팔일무 무대에서 온전히 구현되었다고 밝히며 이번 공연이 일무 계승의 중요한 이정표로 기록될 것이라고 강조했다.

특히 이번 공연은 무용과 음악, 미술과 미디어아트가 한 무대에서 어우러진 복합 예술로 공간예술과 시간예술의 융합이 빚어낸 감각적 울림이 두드러진 무대였다. 배경으로 펼쳐진 한국화가 조풍류 작가의 작품 종묘 영녕전은 깊은 정적 속에 종묘제례의 시간과 정신을 응축한 예술로 호분·분채·석채·금니가 이루는 짙푸른 채색이 오랜 역사의 숨결을 서늘하게 일깨웠다. 실경을 바탕으로 한 영녕전의 장엄한 풍경은 수백 년 제향의 발걸음이 켜켜이 쌓아 올린 신성한 숨결이 화면 위에 생생하게 살아났다.
가로 560cm, 세로 220cm에 이르는 대형 화면은 일무 64인이 만들어내는 집단적 힘과 공명하며 공연 공간을 하나의 거대한 예술 체험으로 확장하였다. 동적인 춤과 정적인 회화가 서로의 존재를 비추는 장면은 종묘제례악이 지닌 미학적 본질을 또 다른 감각으로 깨우는 순간이었다.
무대 배경으로 구현된 영상 역시 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 오래된 처마의 굴곡과 기와 막새의 결을 포착한 흑백 영상은 형상적 미학을 절제된 감성으로 응축하였다. 나아가 일무의 정제된 군무와 조형적 구조를 맑은 물빛처럼 끌어올린 뛰어난 감성으로 관객의 시선을 사로잡았다.
종묘제례악이 지닌 시간의 깊이를 고요하게 끌어올린 영상 연출을 맡은 정재진 미디어 아티스트는 중앙대학교 첨단영상대학원에서 영상 공학 박사학위를 받고, 국립국악원 표창(2020), 서울뮤지컬페스티벌 예그린 어워드 디자이너 상 등을 수상한 바 있는 실력파 창작자다. 뮤지컬 ‘신과 함께’·‘헤드윅’·‘서편제’·‘그날들’, 세계정원박람회 개막 미디어퍼사드, 국립국악원 종묘제례악, ACC 엑스뮤직 페스티벌 등에서 축적된 그의 미디어 감각은 이번 공연에서도 전통과 현대의 경계를 자연스럽게 허물며 시간과 공간을 잇는 시각적 호흡을 완성하고 있었다.
