전쟁놀이는 이상하게도 어느 시대, 어느 나라에서나 어린 시절에 반복되는 유년의 놀이다. 야산이나 골목에서 적과 아군을 가르며 시작되는 놀이는 웃음과 소란으로 가득하지만 인류사는 언제나 그 웃음 뒤편에서 피의 역사를 되풀이해 왔다. 이 노래를 듣고 있으면 인간은 어쩌면 아주 이른 나이부터 전쟁이라는 서사에 가장 쉽게 이끌리는 존재인지도 모른다는 씁쓸한 통찰을 가슴으로 더듬게 된다.
이러한 의미를 ‘가슴으로 듣는 Playlist’의 두 번째 곡에 놓았다. 세계 어디에서나 한 개인의 추억처럼 시작되는 유년의 놀이가 결국 인류사의 질곡으로 이어져 왔다는 사실, 이 노래는 그 오랜 역사의 얼굴을 조용히 그려낸다.

필자는 전쟁을 놀이로 배우게 되는 인간의 아픔을 증언하는 이 노래를 가슴으로 듣고 싶었다. 권력의 억압을 비켜 가지 않았던 여가수 해리스 알렉시우의 음성은 끝까지 담담하다. 비장함을 앞세우거나 눈물을 호소하지도 않는다. 그러나 바로 그 절제 속에서 가사의 행간은 더욱 또렷하게 가슴에 닿는다.
