보문관광단지는 연중 관광객이 집중되는 지역으로, 그동안 보문단지 입구와 북군마을을 중심으로 하수관로에서 발생하는 악취로 인해 주민과 상인을 중심으로 민원이 지속 제기돼 왔다. 이에 경주시는 주민 생활환경 개선을 최우선 과제로 삼고 보다 체계적인 악취 관리 대책 마련에 나섰다.
시는 지난해 3월부터 보문관광단지 일원의 하수관로 환경 실태를 전반적으로 점검하고, 현장 조사와 수질 분석을 통해 생활하수와 음폐수·침출수 처리수가 이송되는 과정에서 냄새 발생 가능성이 높은 구간을 확인했다.
이를 바탕으로 해당 구간에 다층 구조의 하수관로 탈취탑을 설치하고, 성수기와 하절기 등 악취 발생 가능 시기를 고려해 탈취제를 자동 투입하는 설비를 도입하는 등 개선 조치를 시행했다.
그 결과, 현재 탈취 설비 인근 마을과 식당가에서는 하수관로 악취로 인한 민원이 대부분 해소된 것으로 나타났다.
이와 함께 경주시는 보문단지 주요 구간에 설치된 노후 하수 맨홀을 냄새 차단 기능을 갖춘 잠금식 맨홀로 교체했다. 북군마을과 하이코(HICO) 인근 등 유동 인구가 많은 구간을 중심으로 총 25개소가 정비되면서 주변 환경의 쾌적성이 크게 개선됐다는 평가다.
이번 사업은 대규모 하수관로 교체 없이도 비교적 적은 예산으로 단기간 내 실질적인 환경 개선 효과를 거둔 사례로 주목받고 있다.
경주시는 앞으로도 탈취 설비에 대한 정기 점검과 대기질 분석을 통해 악취 문제를 지속적으로 관리하는 한편, 노후 하수관거 교체를 단계적으로 추진해 보문관광단지에 걸맞은 환경 관리 체계를 구축해 나갈 계획이다.
