24일부터 이틀간 경기장·숙박 시설 등 개최 역량 종합 점검
국립대전현충원 참배로 시작… '보훈과 회복'의 가치 강조

세계 상이군인들의 올림픽으로 불리는 '인빅터스 게임(Invictus Games)'의 2029년 개최지 선정을 앞두고, 대전광역시가 본격적인 시험대에 올랐다.
대전시는 24일부터 25일까지 이틀간 영국 인빅터스 게임 재단(IGF) 실사단이 대전을 방문해 유치 후보 도시로서의 적합성을 판단하는 현지 실사를 진행한다고 밝혔다.
이번 실사단은 롭 오웬 재단 대표를 비롯해 리차드 스미스 부대표 등 핵심 관계자 4명으로 구성됐다.
실사단은 첫 일정으로 유득원 행정부시장과 함께 국립대전현충원을 찾았다. 현충원은 이번 대회에서 사이클 경기장으로 활용될 예정으로, '기억에서 시작해 회복으로 이어지는 여정'이라는 대한민국의 대회 비전을 상징적으로 보여주는 장소다.
실사단은 이곳에서 참배를 마친 뒤 대전시청과 시의회를 방문해 유치 의지를 확인했다.
이어 대회 주 경기장인 대전컨벤션센터(DCC)를 포함한 9개 경기장과 선수·가족들을 위한 숙박 시설, 선수 라운지인 '네이션스 홈', 인빅터스 빌리지 예정지 등을 차례로 점검한다. 대전시는 보훈부, 상이군경회와 함께 대전이 가진 우수한 인프라와 보훈 문화를 중점적으로 브리핑할 계획이다.
2014년 영국 해리 왕자가 창설한 인빅터스 게임은 그동안 영국, 미국, 캐나다, 호주 등 주요 선진국에서 개최되어 왔다.
현재 2029년 대회 유치를 놓고 대한민국(대전)은 미국(샌디에이고), 덴마크(올보르)와 치열한 3파전을 벌이고 있다. 개최지는 오는 5월 유치신청서 제출과 6월 프레젠테이션을 거쳐 7월에 최종 결정된다.
유득원 대전시 행정부시장은 "대전은 현충원을 중심으로 국가유공자에 대한 예우 문화가 깊이 뿌리내린 도시이자, 완벽한 경기 시설과 교통망을 갖춘 국제대회의 적임지"라며 "실사 기간 동안 대전이 가진 준비된 역량을 유감없이 보여주어 유치를 확정 짓는 데 최선을 다하겠다"고 강조했다.
실사 일정은 25일 오후 한빛탑에서 열리는 만찬을 끝으로 마무리되며, 대전시는 이번 실사 결과를 바탕으로 최종 유치 제안서 보완에 나설 방침이다.
