음악은 때로 유전자가 품은 고향을 찾아가는 여정이다. 1999년 러시아 태생의 아제르바이잔 혈통의 쌍둥이 형제 라우프(Rauf)와 파이크(Faik) 가수가 그려낸 소리의 여정이 그렇다. 러시아 이젭스크에서 태어났지만 그들의 노래 바탕에는 멀리 카스피해 연안 아제르바이잔 바쿠의 짙푸른 파도 소리가 자맥질하고 있다.
바쿠 오페라 하우스의 감독과 가수였던 외할아버지로부터 물려받은 재능은 쌍둥이 형제의 네 살 어린 나이 때에 피아노 선율 위에서 피어났다. 무려 4옥타브 반을 넘나드는 이들의 경이로운 음역은 천상의 소리를 지상으로 끌어내리려는 준비된 예인(藝人)의 몸짓이기도 하다.
이들의 음악적 뿌리는 묘한 경계에 있다. 이 노래가 발표된 시기는 러시아 대중음악이 전통과 현대의 경계를 허물어 가던 때였다. 마이클 잭슨과 브라이언 맥나이트를 탐닉하며 자란 서구적 R&B의 세련된 그루브를 품었지만, 그 내면에는 무슬림으로서의 경건한 정체성과 가족을 향한 지독한 사랑이 겹쳐있다. 나아가 허무주의적 감성을 관통한 현대 음악 에모 랩(Emo-rap)의 형식을 빌려오면서도 듣는 이의 심연을 흔드는 것은 숨길 수 없는 동양적 서정에 깃든 지독한 그리움이다.
2018년, 러시아 전역을 뒤흔든 '어린 시절(Детство)'이 이들의 화려한 등장을 알렸다면 다음 해 2019년 발표된 ‘자장가(Колыбельная)’는 이들이 왜 현대 러시아 대중음악의 뜨거운 아이콘인지를 확인시켜 준 결정타였다.
에스토니아와 독일에서 핀란드에 이르는 북유럽의 차가운 눈바람을 뚫고 번져나간 이 선율은 지친 영혼을 달래는 거대한 울림이었다. 4옥타브를 자유자재로 유영하는 두 형제의 가창력은 압권이다.

어머니가 아기에게 들려주는 자장가는 국경이 없는 유일한 마음의 노래로 그 기원을 더듬어가면 인간 존재의 감정이 처음으로 형체를 얻은 소리였음을 일깨우게 된다. 자장가는 언어보다 먼저 등장했다. 발달심리학과 진화 음악학이 분석한 내용에 따르면 신생아의 뇌는 의미를 해석하기 전에 리듬과 음높이 그리고 누군가의 온기 있는 울림을 먼저 받아들인다. 이는 오랜 역사의 생명체 포유류의 흔들림과 허밍이 새끼를 안정시키는 보편적 신호라는 점에서 인간도 이와 같은 생물학적 기억 속에서 자장가가 탄생한 것이다. 이처럼 자장가는 문명의 산물이 아닌 인간이 몸짓과 음성으로 처음 소통하던 때부터 존재한 태초의 노래다.
현재까지 확인되는 가장 오래된 자장가는 기원전(BC) 2000년경 메소포타미아 점토판에서 아기를 달래기 위해 부르는 노랫말과 함께 “악한 영이 아이에게 다가오지 않도록 지켜달라”는 기원에서 살펴진다. 나아가 동일한 시대인 고대 이집트의 파피루스 기록에도 신 베스(Bes)가 아이를 보호하는 상징과 함께 재우기 위한 노래가 전해진다. 이처럼 고대 문명권의 자장가는 소중한 생명을 지키는 작은 의식과 동행하였다.

Music is sometimes a journey to find the homeland of our genes. Such is the sonic journey of Rauf and Faik, twin brothers of Azerbaijani descent born in Russia in 1999. Though born in Izhevsk, Russia, their songs are rooted in the deep blue waves of Baku, Azerbaijan, on the distant shores of the Caspian Sea.
The talent they inherited from their maternal grandfather, a director and singer at the Baku Opera House, blossomed on the piano at the tender age of four. Their astonishing vocal range, spanning four and a half octaves, is also the gesture of a prepared artist, ready to bring heavenly sounds down to earth.
Their musical roots lie in a peculiar liminal space. This song was released at a time when Russian pop music was blurring the lines between tradition and modernity. While it embraces the refined grooves of Western R&B, cultivated through the likes of Michael Jackson and Brian McKnight, it also embodies a pious Muslim identity and a profound love for family. Furthermore, while borrowing from the form of emo-rap, a contemporary genre steeped in nihilistic sentiment, it is the profound longing embedded in their undeniable Eastern lyricism that resonates deeply within the listener.
If "Childhood" (Детство), which rocked Russia in 2018, signaled their dazzling rise, the following year, "Lullaby" (Колыбельная), released in 2019, was the decisive blow, confirming their status as a hot icon of contemporary Russian pop music.
This melody, which pierced through the cold snowy winds of Northern Europe, from Estonia and Germany to Finland, was a powerful soothing sound. The two brothers' vocal prowess, freely sweeping across four octaves, is truly impressive.
