이대로 가면 한국 보수는 대통령 권력 의회 권력 지방 권력 모든 걸 내주게 된다. ‘트리플(triple) 패배’다. 이는 사실상 체제 붕괴를 의미한다. 황당한 건 이 체제 붕괴가 폭력이 아니라 민주적 절차에 의해 이뤄진다는 사실이다.
이러한 전대미문의 체제 붕괴 위기는 장동혁의 무능함이 있다. 일단 그는 의뭉스럽다. 그의 정치적 이념과 노선이 무엇인지 알기 힘들다. 일관된 메시지가 없고 지금도 그가 ‘친윤’인지 ‘반윤’인지, ‘절윤’을 할건지 말건지, 그리고 전한길과 고성국과는 어떠한 관계로 갈건지 등에 대해 그 속내를 파악하기 어렵다.

장동혁을 지지하는 이들은 패배주의에 빠졌다. 장동혁이 사퇴해봐야 어차피 패배가 뻔한 마당에 굳이 사퇴할 필요가 없다는 얕은 계산이다. 당권을 장악해 버티면 장동혁과 그 주변인들에게 기회가 오지 않겠느냐는 막연한 기대다. 그 패배주의를 떨칠 때다.
장동혁이 사퇴를 결단하면 지방선거에서 반전이 있을 수 있다. 지난 대선에서 이재명이 얻는 지지율은 김문수와 이준석의 지지율을 합친 것 보다 0.07% 낮았다는 점에 주목해야 한다. 국민 다수가 극좌파 집권을 원치 않았다는 뜻이다.
이번 지방선거에서 한국 보수가 패배하면, 한국의 이념 비대칭이 더 심화될 것이기에 국민들의 경계심을 일깨우면 충분히 승산이 있을 수 있다. 방법은 장동혁 사퇴 밖에 없다. 이 즈음에 극단주의와 확실히 선을 긋고 중도확장에 나서면 반전 가능성이 충분하다. 그리고 그게 이치에 부합한다. 바로 ‘중위투표자 정리’다. 원래 선거가 다가오면 정당들은 ‘중도’로 수렴하는 게 당연하다. 극단주의를 고수하는 건 거꾸로 가는 전략이다. 어리석다는 뜻이다. 중위투표자 정리는 과학이자 수학이다.
이제라도 구도를 민주당 대 반민주당으로 만들 필요가 있다. 수학적으로, 민주당을 ‘폐쇄집합(closed set)’으로 놓으면 그 여집합은 ‘열린집합(open set)’이 된다. 승리하려면 그 열린집합을 최대한 넓혀야 한다. 극좌주의를 제외한 나머지 모두를 담아야 하는 것이다. 하지만 국힘은 스스로를 더 작은 폐쇄집합으로 축소시키고 있다. 극단적 메시지와 배타적 태도를 통해 중도에서 더 멀어지는 중이다. 어리석디 어리석다. 그 어리석은 전략을 주도하고 있는 게 바로 장동혁을 비롯해 극단주의자들 즉, 컬트 극우주의자들인 것이다.
특히 최근 장동혁의 방미 행보도 황당하기만 하다. 장동혁과 미국을 다녀온 국힘 의원들도 그 길어진 여정에 대해 문제를 제기했다고 한다. 세계 10위권 경제 대국의 제1야당 대표가 실무급 인사만 만나고 돌아온 건 한국 국격의 문제일 수도 있다. 더 문제는 그 와중에 드러난 태도다. 선거를 앞두고 전선이 무너지는 와중에 그렇게 한가로이 외유를 즐기는 모습은 보수 지지층의 정서를 철저히 배신한 것이다. 그 신뢰가 무너졌다고 볼 수 있다.

당내 상황은 더 심각하다. 공천 파동, 후보 부재, 핵심 지역에서의 경쟁력 상실. 심지어 후보들이 당 대표와 거리두기를 시도하는 ‘탈동혁’ 현상이 확산되고 있다. 이는 리더십 붕괴의 증거다.
해법은 하나다. 장동혁의 결단이다. 사퇴다. 어쩌면 지금이 무너지는 한국 보수를 다시 세우고 체제 붕괴를 막는 마지막 기회일지도 모른다. 지금 장동혁에게 필요한 건 사퇴하는 용기이다. yslee1992@hotmail.com

It is a ‘triple defeat.’ This effectively signifies the collapse of the system. What is absurd is the fact that this system collapse is being achieved through democratic procedures, not violence.
This unprecedented crisis of system collapse is attributed to Jang Dong-hyuk’s incompetence. First of all, he is enigmatic. It is difficult to discern his political ideology and political stance. He lacks a consistent message, and even now, it is difficult to grasp his true intentions regarding whether he is ‘pro-Yoon’ or ‘anti-Yoon,’ whether he intends to ‘sever ties’ with Yoon, and what kind of relationship he intends to maintain with Jeon Han-gil and Ko Sung-guk.
Those who support Jang Dong-hyuk have fallen into defeatism. Their shallow calculation is that there is no need for him to resign, given that defeat is inevitable anyway. It is a vague hope that if they seize control of the party and hold on, an opportunity might arise for Jang Dong-hyuk and his associates. It is time to shake off that defeatism.
If Jang Dong-hyuk decides to resign, there could be a turnaround in the local elections. We must note that in the last presidential election, Lee Jae-myung's approval rating was 0.07% lower than the combined ratings of Kim Moon-soo and Lee Joon-seok. This means that the majority of the public did not want the far-left to come to power.
If the Korean conservatives lose in these local elections, the country's ideological asymmetry will deepen; therefore, there is a sufficient chance of victory if they awaken the public's vigilance. The only way is for Jang Dong-hyuk to resign. If they draw a clear line against extremism at this point and set out to expand into the center, there is ample possibility for a turnaround. And that aligns with logic. It is precisely the "Median Voter Theorem." It is natural for political parties to converge toward the "center" as an election approaches. Clinging to extremism is a strategy that goes in the opposite direction. It means it is foolish. The Median Voter Theorem is both science and mathematics.
Even now, it is necessary to frame the contest as a battle between the Democratic Party and the anti-Democratic Party. Mathematically, if the Democratic Party is viewed as a "closed set," its complement becomes an "open set." To win, that open set must be expanded as much as possible. It must encompass everyone except the far-left. However, the People Power Party is shrinking itself into an even smaller closed set. Through extreme messaging and an exclusive attitude, it is drifting further away from the center. It is utterly foolish. Leading this foolish strategy are extremists, including Jang Dong-hyuk—in other words, cult far-right extremists.
In particular, Jang Dong-hyuk's recent visit to the United States is simply absurd. It is reported that even the People Power Party lawmakers who traveled to the U.S. with Jang raised concerns about the extended journey. For the leader of the main opposition party of the world's top 10 economy to return after meeting only with working-level officials could be seen as a matter of Korea's national dignity. The bigger problem, however, is the attitude revealed during that time. The sight of him leisurely enjoying a trip abroad while the front lines are collapsing ahead of the election is a thorough betrayal of the sentiments of the conservative support base. It can be seen as a collapse of that trust.
The situation within the party is even more serious. There are controversies over nominations, a lack of candidates, and a loss of competitiveness in key regions. Furthermore, a phenomenon known as "Dong-hyeok-de-campaigning," where candidates attempt to distance themselves from the party leader, is spreading. This is evidence of a leadership collapse.
There is only one solution. It is Jang Dong-hyeok's decision. It is resignation. Perhaps now is the last chance to rebuild the crumbling Korean conservative camp and prevent the collapse of the system. What Jang Dong-hyeok needs right now is the courage to resign. yslee1992@hotmail.com
