경일대학교(총장 정현태)가 3월부터 ‘언제, 어디서나, 무제한’을 모토로 한 획기적인 영어교육 시스템을 시행한다.
경일대학교가 영어교육 전문가와 대학 연구진의 논의를 거쳐 구축한 ‘MZ세대를 위한 맞춤형 영어교육’ 시스템은 MZ세대 학생들이 요구하는 영어 수업의 질과 양을 무제한으로 제공하는 것이 특징이다.

특히 돋보이는 것은 ‘영어회화’ 과목으로. 대학마다 영어회화를 1학년 교양필수 과목으로 지정해 학기 당 한 과목씩만 개설하는 것이 일반적인데 경일대는 과감하게 이를 탈피했다고 밝혔다.
영어회화를 총 6단계(S·Ｉ·Ⅱ·Ⅲ·Ⅳ·Ⅴ)로 세분화해서 강좌를 개설함으로써 학생들은 타 대학에 비해 선택의 폭이 훨씬 넓어졌다. 이를 통해 단계별 2학점인 영어회화를 자신의 수준에 맞춰 신청할 수 있고, 재수강도 가능하기 때문에 학생들은 총 24학점까지 들을 수 있다.
영어회화 강의에는 원어민 교수만 참여한다. 단, 국내 교수가 강의에 참여할 시에는 영국 IELTS(International English Language Testing System) 7.0 레벨을 통과해야 강의를 할 수 있다. IELTS 7.0 기준을 통과하지 못한 국내 교수들은 영어회화 강의에서 배제하는 등 강의자격 요건을 엄격하게 관리한다.
또한 경일대가 새롭게 개설하는 ‘스페셜 렉처(Special Lecture)’는 수업을 희망하는 수강생이 일정 인원 이상 모이면 강의를 개설해주고 학점까지 인정해주는 프로그램이다.
학과, 학년, 동아리, 교직원 등 수강생 구성에 있어 어떠한 제한도 두지 않으며 주문형으로 교육내용을 설계하고 자발적으로 구성한 그룹별로 영어 강좌를 무제한으로 제공한다. 학생들은 이수시간과 테스트를 통과하면 학점도 인정받는다.
정현태 총장은 “교육과정을 유연하게 운영함으로써 학생들이 스스로 학습목표를 설정하고 영어를 비롯해 원하는 교양·전공 공부를 무제한으로 마음껏 하게 해주려는 취지”라고 설명했다.
