오늘날 세계 최대도시 뉴욕(New York)이 탄생한 배경에는 영국의 피렌체로 불리는 중세 문화유산이 많은 영국 북부 도시 요크(York)가 있다. 이러한 도시 요크에서 지난 5월 28일(토) 요크 한국의 날 축제가 열렸다.
'한국의 날' 축제는 영국 주요 도시에서 하루 동안 한국의 다양한 전통문화를 소개하는 프로그램으로 지난 2018년 영국 중부 도시 노팅엄과 셰필드와 남서부 도시 웨일스에서 열리기 시작한 축제로 요크 도시에서는 작년(2021)부터 열리기 시작하였다.
주영한국문화원(원장 이정우)과 요크 세인트 존 대학교 공동협력으로 세인트 존 대학 야외광장과 실내 주요 시설에서 개최된 축제는 한식. 서예. 공예. 한복과 같은 다양한 한국 전통문화체험 부스가 설치되어 우리의 문화를 널리 알렸다.
축제의 주요 프로그램은 브라이튼 대학교 팀 와튼 교수의 (미식외교: 김치)라는 주제의 강연과 2015년 베를린국제영화제 공식 초청작인 황윤 감독의 (잡식가족의 딜레마)가 특별 상영되었다. 인간과 동물의 관계에 대한 심층적인 다큐멘터리 영화로 잘 알려진 여성 황윤 감독의 돼지의 일상과 사육환경을 담은 다큐 영화 (잡식가족의 딜레마)는 여운이 있는 메시지를 영국에 전하였다.
이어 한국 문화의 전통과 현대가 어우러진 다양한 국악 공연과 K-팝 댄스 공연은 신명과 감성이 넘쳐났다.
이번 축제는 한국어학과가 속한 요크 단과대학 교수진과 학생들이 주축이 되어 진행한 축제였다. BBC 요크 라디오 방송은 한국어학과 레이첼 위카소노 교수와의 인터뷰 등을 통해 한국 문화의 특성에 대하여 상세한 내용을 담은 ‘한국의 날’ 행사를 보도하였다.
잉글랜드 북부 도시 요크는 영국인들에게 매년 '가장 인기 있는 도시'와 '가장 살기 좋은 도시'로 선정되는 곳이다. 중세의 역사적인 문화유산이 고스란히 보존된 도시는 영국은 물론 유럽 각지에서 관광객이 몰려드는 도시이다.
이와 같은 도시에서 한국학과가 개설되고 한국 문화에 대한 관심이 날로 커지고 있는 사실은 매우 중요하다. 지난해 요크 한국의 날 행사가 처음 개최된 후 요크 세인트 존 대학교에는 한국문화동아리(Korea Society)가 결성되어 “올해 가장 인기 있는 동아리”로 선정되었다.
회장을 맡은 2학년 학생 하이디 린(Heidi Lynne)은 "요크에 K-팝 외에도 한국의 민요와 판소리 그리고 탈춤과 같은 독창적인 전통문화를 소개하여 한국 문화를 널리 알리고 싶다“고 했다.

이와 같은 우리의 고유한 전통과 현대의 감성이 어우러진 열린 문화 광장을 영국에 널리 알린 배경에는 오랫동안 주요한 프로그램을 추진하여온 주영한국문화원 실무진들의 열정이 빚어낸 결과이다.
