전 군수는 이날 퇴임사에서“지난 4년 동안 희망보다는 고난과 좌절의 시간이 많았지만, 군민 여러분과 함께 위기를 슬기롭게 극복하는 모든 순간이 가슴 뭉클했다”고 말했다.
지난 2018년 제47대 울진군수에 취임한 전찬걸 군수는 ‘소통행정, 현장군정, 비전울진’이라는 군정 목표 아래 원전의존형 경제구조 극복과 미래 100년을 위한 울진 만들기에 매진했다.
비록 태풍과 코로나19 유행, 대형 산불 발생 등으로 그 어느 때보다 많은 재난과 어려움을 겪었지만, 위기를 기회로 삼아 군민과 함께 극복하며 울진이 한 단계 더 성장하는 발판을 마련했다는 평가를 받고 있다.
코로나19로 침체된 지역경제 활성화를 위해 지역화폐인 ‘울진사랑카드’를 발행하고, 경상북도 제1호 공공산후조리원과 울진군립추모원 개원, 취약계층을 위한 생활민원기동처리반 운영 등을 통해 군민이 살기 좋은 울진을 만드는 데 힘썼다.
특히, 재임 중 원자력을 활용한 대규모 그린수소 생산.실증단지 유치를 비롯해 수중글라이더 핵심부품.장비 기술개발 및 운용센터, 왕돌초 국가 해중공원벨트 조성 등과 같은 해양신산업 발굴이라는 성과도 이끌어냈다.
