(브레이크뉴스인천 문광수 기자) 인천시가 9월의 해양유물로 선정된‘염전 무자위(수차)’를 소개했다.
무자위는 천일제염을 하던 염전에서 바닷물을 끌어들이는데 사용했던 물건으로, 지역에 따라 ‘무자새’·‘자새’·‘물자새’·‘수리차’·‘수차’ 등으로 불린다.
무자위는 수차(水車)의 우리말로 물을 자아올린다는 의미로 담고 있다.
가운데 축에 나선형으로 발판을 붙인 무자위의 형태는 물레방아 바퀴를 닮았으며 한쪽에 수구(水口)를 달아 퍼 올린 물이 흘러나가도록 만들어졌다.
물레방아가 위에서 떨어지는 물의 무게로 위에서 아래로 돌며 방아를 찧는다면, 무자위는 반대로 아래에서 위로 돌며 물에 잠긴 날개가 물을 퍼 담아 올린다.
