[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 하동군 지리산 쌍계사와 불일폭포 일원이 국가지정문화재 ‘명승’으로 지정됐다.
명승 지정은 지난 2월 하동군이 자연유산 우수 잠재자원 추천서를 제출하고, 문화재청의 서류심사와 현장조사, 지정예고를 거쳐 이뤄졌으며, 하동군에서 명승으로 처음 이름을 올렸다.
문화재로서의 명승은 경관성·역사성 등 종합적 가치가 충족돼야 지정되는데 이번 지정을 통해 지리산 쌍계사와 불일폭포 일원의 종합적 가치를 인정받아 의미가 크다.
지리산 쌍계사와 불일폭포 일원은 과거부터 다양한 문헌에 등장하는 저명한 명승지로 역사적·경관적 가치가 우수하다.
특히, 지리산 10경 중 하나인 불일폭포는 약 60m 높이의 거대한 폭포로 다양한 식생과 기암괴석, 계곡이 어우러져 수려한 경관을 이루고, 불일암에서 조망하는 지리산의 전경은 빼어난 비경을 보여준다.
또한 쌍계사에서 불일폭포에 이르는 산중은 통일신라 진감선사 유적과 쌍계석문 등 최치원의 행적이 현존하고, 신선사상의 전형적 공간인 청학동의 장소로 알려져 있다.
뿐만 아니라 지리산 수림과 더불어 스님들이 왕래하던 옛길과 불일암, 국사암, 환학대, 완폭대 각석 등 옛 명승 자원이 유존하는 등 학술적 가치가 풍부하다.
이번 명승 지정을 통해 오랜 세월 우리 민족과 함께해온 자연유산의 아름다움을 온전히 전달하고 가치를 향유하기 위한 하동군의 노력이 결실을 맺은 것으로 보인다.
군 관계자는 “국립공원관리공단(지리산사무소)과 협력해 지정된 문화재를 전 군민이 향유하는 정책을 수립하고, 관광 자원화와 더불어 보존과 관리에 철저를 기할 것”이라고 말했다.
