[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 홍태용 김해시장은 지난 5일 저녁(현지시각) 미국 워싱턴주 레이크우드시 시청 회의실에서 제이슨 웨일런 레이크우드 시장, 코니 콜먼 래카디 레이크우드 자매도시위원장과 자매도시 협약을 체결했다.
양 시는 지난 2007년 국제우호도시 협약 체결 이후 꾸준한 교류를 통해 2019년 축제 상호 방문 당시 자매결연 체결로 우호관계 격상에 합의했다. 하지만 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해 협약식이 연기되면서 3년 만에 협약식이 성사됐다.
이날 협약식에는 홍 시장과 류명열 김해시의회 의장, 관련 공무원 등 김해시 대표단과 제이슨 웨일런 레이크우드 시장을 비롯해 자매도시위원회, 시의회 의원, 시 직원 등 레이크우드시 관계자가 참석했다.
홍 시장은 이 자리에서 “두 도시 간 자매결연이 폭넓은 교류 기반을 마련해 양 도시 시민들에게 공동 발전과 이익을 가져다 줄 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
이어 제이슨 웨일런 시장은 “오늘 김해시와의 자매도시 협약 체결은 역사에 길이 남을 중요한 날이다”며 “앞으로 김해시와의 교류를 교육, 경제, 문화 등 다양한 분야로 발전시켜 나갈 계획이다”고 밝혔다.
