21일 밤 진행된 MBN 예능 프로그램 '불타는 트롯맨' 준결승전은 삼대천왕전으로 국민가수 남진, 심수봉, 주현미의 노래를 부르는 치열한 경연을 통하여 8명의 결승전 진출자가 가려졌다.
결승에 진출한 8명은 황영웅, 민수현, 박민수, 손태진, 공훈, 에녹, 신성, 김중연이었다. 이중 김중연은 마지막 한 명의 결승행 추가 경연자를 결정하는 국민대표단 투표를 통하여 깊은 의미의 결승 진출을 거머쥐었다.
김중연이 부른 남진 가수의 노래 ‘모르리’는 작사가의 애틋한 사연이 있는 노래로 그는 퍼포먼스의 제왕에 걸맞게 새로운 해석이 돋보였다. 노래가 끝난 후 연예인 판정단 중 한 명인 가수 조항조는 깊은 의미를 덧붙였다.

주영한국문화원이 영국의 유명 프로덕션 시리어스(SERIOUS)와 공동으로 주최하는 K-뮤직페스티벌이라는 주요한 행사가 있다. 영국 런던에서 지난 2013년 창작국악을 선보인 후 2014년 제1회 페스티벌이 열린 후 매년 개최되고 있다. 전통음악에서부터 현대 대중음악에 이르기까지 다양한 음악을 소개하는 한국음악 축제 K-뮤직페스티벌은 우리의 정신과 감성을 전하는 주요한 행사로 자리잡았다.
실력이 있는 다양한 아티스트의 해외 진출을 위한 교두보를 구축하며 영국은 물론 유럽 전 지역에 널리 알려진 K-뮤직 페스티벌에 김중연 아티스트의 출연이 이루어졌으면 한다.
그동안 가요장르 뮤지션과 밴드가 K-뮤직 페스티벌에 출연한 사실을 살펴보면 2014년(1회)에 인디밴드 ‘장기하와 얼굴’ 2015년(2회)에 3인조 여성 인디밴드 ‘바버렛츠’ 2016년(3회) 재즈뮤지션 나윤선에 이어 2017년(4회) 록밴드 ‘아시안 체어샷’과 록밴드 ‘단편선과 선원들’ 2018년(5회) 재즈 뮤지션 나윤선 공연으로 트롯 분야 공연자는 전무하였다.
역대급 퍼포먼스를 선보이며 예술 트롯의 가능성을 열어젖힌 김중연 아티스트의 수준 높은 공연이 예술의 본고장 영국 런던에서 이루어져 한국 대중가요 100년의 역사를 세계에 알리는 기회가 되었으면 한다.
