우리나라의 대표적인 전통미 중 하나인 달항아리의 미학을 담은 음악이 오는 25(토)일 오후 7시 30분 유서 깊은 영국 왕립음악원 안젤라 버지스 홀에서 초연된다. 이신우 서울대 작곡과 교수의 ‘달항아리’이다.
초연되는 작품 ‘달항아리’는 이신우 교수가 팬데믹 시기에 런던에 체류하였을 때 전통 조선백자 달항아리를 접하며 느낀 감성에서 탄생하였다. 깊은 사유를 관통한 명상적인 감성이 녹아내린 멜로디에 청량하면서도 기품이 있는 형태미를 그려낸 다악장 형식 작품이다.
공연에는 첫 두 곡인 ‘비올라와 피아노를 위한 달항아리를 위한 시’와 전통 달항아리의 이미지를 국악에 투영시킨 작품 '달항아리에 부친 보허자' 곡이 발표된다. 보허자는 ‘장춘불로지곡’으로도 부르는 전통 궁중 연례악인 관악합주곡이다. 이를 바탕으로 전통 달항아리를 외국인이 바라보고 생각하는 관점의 감성을 헤아린 것이다.
이번 공연이 주목되는 이유는 순백의 둥근 형태에 그 어떠한 인위적인 무늬가 없는 순결한 자연의 미가 녹아내린 달항아리에 대한 미학적 관점을 한국적인 감성과 서양적인 감성으로 대비시킨 시도와 해석이다.

대영박물관 한국실에는 역사를 품은 백자 달항아리 한 점이 우리의 아름다움을 대표하고 있다. 이신우 교수는 이러한 달항아리를 만났을 것이다. 본디 이 달항아리는 홍콩 태생의 영국 유명 도예가 버나드 리치(1887~1979)가 1935년 일제 강점기에 덕수궁에서 전시회를 열고 귀국하면서 구입해간 유물이었다.
당시 그는 달항아리를 가지고 가면서 (나는 행복을 안고 갑니다)라는 말을 남겼다. 그가 세상을 떠난 후 경매에 부쳐진 유물이 우여곡절을 거쳐 대영박물관에 소장된 것이다.
이와 함께 스위스 취리히에서 태어나 영국에서 성장한 작가 알랭 드 보통(1969~)은 우리의 달항아리에 대한 시대를 관통한 평가를 남긴 인물이다. 1997년 프루스트의 삶과 작품을 재해석한 논픽션 (프루스트가 당신의 삶을 바꿀 수 있는 방법)으로 베스트셀러 작가가 되었다.
2008년 인생학교 설립 후 2013년 미술사학자 존 암스트롱과 함께 펴낸 (예술은 우리를 어떻게 치유하는가)에서 조선의 백자 달항아리에 대하여 (겸손이라는 미덕에 최상의 경의를 표하는 작품)이라고 표현 하였다.
공연에서는 이외에도 동양과 서양의 감성이 어우러진 ‘비올라를 위한 카프리스 제2번-적벽’과 헝가리 음악가이며 음악 인류학자로 전통 민요를 토대로 민족적인 음악 어법을 정립한 벨라 바르톡의 '루마니아 민속 무곡'도 발표된다.
이 공연은 주영한국문화원이 지난 2016년부터 출발한 프로젝트 ‘하우스 콘서트’ 프로그램이다. 세계 클래식 공연의 중심인 영국에서 활약하고 있는 젊은 음악가를 지원하기 위하여 기획되어 영국 3대 음악원인 왕립음악원과 왕립음악대학, 길드홀 음악원과 협력하여 한국 신진 음악가를 발굴해오면서 공연을 지원하였다. 2023년 올해에는 신진 음악가와 스승의 협연과 한국 문학을 바탕으로 한 가곡과 뮤지컬 공연 등 다양한 무대가 기획되었다.
올해의 프로그램 첫 공연인 이신우 교수의 ‘달항아리’ 작품 초연에는 비올리스트 이화윤과 피아니스트 고은이가 함께한다. 또한, 공연은 3월 2일(목) 오전 11시 30분 템스강변의 문화 요람 서머싯 하우스에서 열리는 영국 공예 진흥원이 기획한 공예 페어 콜렉트 2023행사에서도 연주된다.
특히 세계에서 최초로 초연되는 ‘달항아리’ 공연에 맞추어 달항아리를 눈과 귀로 감상해 볼 수 있는 뜻을 담아 주영한국문화원과 런던의 한컬렉션(대표 박진수)이 공동 주관하여 신경균 도예가와 서영기 교수의 달항아리 작품도 함께 전시된다.
비올리스트 이화윤은 요하네스 브람스국제콩쿠르와 유리 바슈메트 국제 비올라 콩쿠르의 최연소 우승자이다. 특히 그는 3살 나이에 전통 판소리로 음악을 시작한 신동으로 이러한 감성이 바탕이 되어 국악과 클래식의 단순한 융합이 아닌 겹겹의 빛깔을 드리우는 승화된 연주자로 평가받는 세계적인 비올리스트이다.
2020년 이신우 교수의 ‘비올라와 소리북을 위한 적벽'을 초연 발표하였으며 2021년 이음음악제에서 이신우 교수의 ‘대지의 시’를 초연 협연하여 절찬을 받았다. 이와 같은 호흡을 바탕으로 더욱더 깊은 감성을 담아낼 것으로 기대된다. 고은이 피아니스트는 왕립음악원을 우등 졸업하고 찰스 헤넨 국제 콩쿠르 우승 후에 유럽과 한국에서 활동하면서 이신우 교수의 여러 음악에 참여하였다.
이신우 교수는 서울대 음대 작곡과를 졸업하고 영국으로 건너가 왕립음악원과 서섹스대학에서 작곡을 공부하고 현재 귀국하여 서울대 음대 작곡과 최연소와 최초 여교수가 되었다. 1991년과 1998년 세계음악제 수상에서부터 1992년 가우데아무스 국제작곡콩쿠르 입상, 1997년 레너드 번스타인 예루살렘국제작곡콩쿠르 입상에 이어 영국의 가장 권위 있는 클래식 저널 뮤지컬 타임스가 주최하는 코넬리우스 카듀 작곡 콩쿠르에서 우승하였다.
안익태 작곡상과 난파음악상에 이어 문화관광부 선정 오늘의 젊은 예술가상(2001)을 수상한 그의 음악 세계는 인간이 존재하는 근원과 본성에 대한 깊은 사유를 통하여 치유를 추구하는 의식이 국경이 없는 언어의 감성을 제시하는 작곡가로 평가받고 있다. 이러한 근원에는 고유한 전통음악과 예술은 물론 자연에 대한 깊은 헤아림이 녹아있다.
