문득 궁금한 가수가 있었다. 10년 전 이스라엘 오디션 더 보이스에 출연하여 주목 받았던 오피르 벤 쉬트릿이다. 당시 이스라엘에서도 엄격하기로 유명한 시온주의 공동체 여고생이었던 그는 오디션 프로그램에 출연하여 좋은 성적을 얻었지만, 학교에서 정학 처분을 받아 이스라엘은 물론 세계적인 주목을 받았다. 근황은 조용한 활동을 하고 있었다.
오피르 벤 쉬트릿이 부른 발라드처럼(בלדה" שמו)의 가시관(Wreath of thorns)이라는 노래는 제목의 복잡함처럼 많은 이야기가 있었다.
일반적으로 알려진 내용은 이스라엘 시인 나탄 요나탄이 1973년 이스라엘과 아랍 국가 연합 사이에 벌어진 욤 키푸르 전쟁에서 아들을 잃고 쓴 시 발라드처럼(בלדה" שמו) 이라는 것이다.
그러나 가사 내용을 헤아리면서 살피게 된 사실은 아들이 전쟁에서 희생당하기 전에 썼던 시로 잡지사에 보냈으나 발표되지 않고 편집장의 서랍에서 잠자던 시였다.
이후 1973년 말 시인의 아들이 전쟁에서 희생당한 소식이 전해지면서 추모의 시로도 적합한 사실을 들어 시인의 허락을 받아 추모의 시로 발표되었다. 당시 소아과 의사이며 민속음악 작곡가였던 기드온 코렌(Gideon Koren)이 작곡한 노래였다.
이후 이스라엘 주요 가수들이 불러 많은 사랑을 받았으며 현재 필자가 확인한 6개의 노래 중 하나가 오피르 벤 쉬트릿의 노래다.
언어를 모르면서 해당 언어의 노래 가사를 번역한다는 것은 무모한 일임을 익히 알면서도 유대 사회에서 가장 대중적인 성가로 불리는 노래에 대하여 살펴보고 싶었지만, 번역된 가사가 없어 늘 아쉬웠다.
히브리어의 간단치 않은 특성으로 많은 언어 중 유일하게 구글 이외 번역기능이 거의 부재한 상황에서 인터넷 사전과 얄팍한 상식을 동원하였다.

특히 가수마다 조금씩 다른 가사를 가지고 있는 어려움 속에서 시인의 믿음으로 승화시킨 경건함이 함축된 구절의 이해가 쉽지 않았다. 덧붙여 가사 중에서 말씀과 언약이라는 관점의 구절을 신명기로 번역하면서 유대인들이 노래를 사랑하는 이유가 시인이 추구한 깊은 의식임을 헤아렸다. (미흡한 가사에 이해를 바란다) artwww@naver.com

In addition, by translating the lyrics from the perspective of words and covenants into a sacred book, I understood that the reason why Jews love songs is the deep consciousness pursued by the poet.
