세종시가 광역시 최초 ‘제3기 교육국제화특구’로 지정되는 쾌거를 이뤄냈다고 밝혔다.
교육부는 2013년부터 5년마다 전국 지자체를 대상으로 국제화 수준, 외국어 교육 여건, 국제경쟁력 강화 정도 등이 우수한 지역을 교육국제화특구로 지정하고 있다.
교육국제화특구는 국제화된 전문인력양성, 국가 국제경쟁력강화, 지역균형발전 도모 등을 목적으로 하고 있다.
세종시는 세종시교육청과 긴밀한 협업을 이뤄 광역시 중 유일하게 특구로 지정됐으며, 이번에 지정된 지역은 세종시를 포함해 총12곳이다.
교육국제화특구로 지정된 세종시는 교육부로부터 오는 2027년까지 5년간 매년 특별교부금을 지원받게 되며, 지정 분야는 초중등 분야이고, 지정 유형은 ‘세계시민양성’과 ‘글로벌교원육성’이다.
세종시와 세종시교육청은 교육국제화특구 지정을 발판 삼아 청소년 국제교류분야와 글로벌 교원 육성에 중점을 두고 394억 원의 예산을 투입해 23개 사업을 5개년에 걸쳐 추진할 방침이다.
또한 내실 있는 사업추진으로 세종시 국제교육 기반을 마련해나가는 한편, 2027하계세계대학경기대회와 2025 국제정원도시박람회 성공개최로 국제역량을 키워나갈 계획이라고 밝혔다.
