대학과 프로 유망주들의 국제경쟁력 향상을 위한 힘찬 날갯짓이 시작됐다.
'2023 문경·BUNPATTYBUN 국제 대학배구 대회'가 오는 8월 26일(토)부터 31일(목)까지 6일 동안 경상북도 문경시 국군체육부대 선승관에서 열린다.
이번 대회는 총 8개국의 남자 대학과 프로팀 소속 배구 유망주들이 국제 대회를 통해 경기력을 향상시키고, 국제적 교류와 우정의 장을 마련하기 위해 창설했다.
한국대학배구연맹과 대한배구협회가 주최하고, 경상북도 문경시와 수제버거 전문 브랜드 번패티번(BUN PATTY BUN)이 후원한다.
이번 대회에 출전하는 한국 대표팀 선수들은 22일부터 국군체육부대 선승관에서 베트남 대표팀과 연습 경기를 갖는 등 전력 향상에 박차를 가하고 있다.
한국 대표팀은 프로 신입급 유망주 5명, 대학 유망주 9명으로 총 14명이 발탁됐다.
대표팀에는 이달 초 중국 청두에서 열린 하계 유니버시아드 대회와 구미시 박정희체육관에서 열린 2023 KOVO컵 대회에서 팀의 주전으로 좋은 활약을 펼친 선수들도 합류했다.
하계 유니버시아드에는 박승수(OK저축은행), 정태준(현대캐피탈), 이윤수(경기대)가 출전했다. KOVO컵에는 박승수, 정태준, 이준(대한항공), 신승훈(KB손해보험), 장지원(햔국전력)이 각각 출전했다.

대학 선수 중에도 장래가 주목되는 선수들이 다수 포함됐다. 특히 신장 216cm로 한국 배구 역사상 최장신 선수인 조진석(경희대 3학년)이 태극 마크를 달고 첫선을 보인다.
조진석은 "의미 있는 국제대회에 출전하게 돼 매우 감사할 따름이다. 친선 대회 같다고 생각할 수 있지만, 저희는 강팀들을 이기고 싶은 마음이 크다"고 소감을 밝혔다.
그는 또 "국내 배구 역사상 최장신이라는 타이틀에 부담감은 있지만, 이겨내기 위해 노력하겠다. 이번 대회를 통해 부족한 부분을 보완하고 더 성장하는 기회로 삼겠다"고 각오를 다졌다.
박예찬(경희대) 선수도 "한국 선수들과만 경기를 하다가, 국내에서 국제대회가 열려 해외 선수들과 경기를 할 수 있다는 건 큰 영광"이라며 "해외 팀들의 배구 스타일과 기술을 경험할 수 있어 더욱 기대가 된다"고 밝혔다.
양수현(경기대) 선수는 "개막 경기인 한일전에 최선을 다해 이기도록 하겠다"며 "팬분들께서 TV 중계에 많은 시청을 해주시고, 경기장에도 많이 찾아주셔서 응원해 주시면 감사하겠다"고 말했다.
한편, 이번 대회에 출전한 8개국은 대한민국, 미국, 영국, 호주, 일본, 중국, 태국, 베트남이다. 조별 예선 리그에서 A조는 한국, 일본, 중국, 태국, B조는 미국, 영국, 호주, 베트남이 편성됐다.
