영국 런던의 대표적인 복합 예술 공간 바비칸센터는 유럽에서 가장 큰 규모로 단순한 공간의 크기가 아닌 아티스트의 가장 영예로운 무대이다.
주영한국문화원(원장 선승혜)이 전한 우리나라 아티스트의 바비칸센터 공연 소식은 한영수교 140주년을 맞는 역사적 의의와 함께 깊은 자긍심을 갖게 한다.
지난 9월 20일 한국 현대무용의 실험정신을 대표하는 안무가 안은미의 작품 '드래곤즈(Dragons)가 한국 무용사상 최초로 바비칸센터에서 공연되어 기립박수와 함께 큰 평가를 받았다. 23일까지 이어진 바비칸센터 4회 공연은 연일 만석이었으며 이어 맨체스터 라우리 극장에서 열린 26, 27일 공연 또한 전 객석이 매진되는 기염을 토하였다.

드래곤즈 작품은 한국을 중심으로 일본, 대만, 인도네시아, 말레이시아의 2000년생 용띠 무용수들이 홀로그램으로 등장하는 현대무용과 입체적인 첨단 디지털 기법이 어우러진 작품이다.
안은미 안무가는 각 나라를 순회하며 아시아 미래의 비전을 상징하는 2000년생 Z세대 무용수와 함께하는 작업을 구상하였다. 그러나 코로나19 라는 유례없는 감염 시대를 맞아 국경이 봉쇄되는 상황을 맞게 되면서 이와 같은 시대 상황까지 아우른 작품으로 구상하여 봉쇄된 나라 무용수들의 영상을 홀로그램으로 작업하였다.
이렇게 탄생한 드래곤즈 작품은 신화의 동물 용이 품은 전설의 힘을 복합적인 이미지로 구현하여 무한한 가능성을 향한 도전 정신으로 승화시킨 작품이다. 작품의 음악은 ‘범 내려온다’로 잘 알려진 밴드 이날치의 리더인 장영규가 음악을 맡았다. 그는 1991년 안은미무용단(컴퍼니) 음악 감독을 맡은 이후 오랫동안 많은 작업을 함께하였다.
영화 타짜에서 도입부에 흐르는 인상적인 음악을 선보인 음악 감독 장영규는 대중음악에서 전통음악에 이르기까지 폭넓은 음악을 매만진 감성의 천재이다. 입체적인 첨단 디지털 기법이 어우러진 드래곤즈의 생생하고 다양한 무대에 녹아든 현대와 전통을 관통한 사운드트랙은 성공적인 공연을 이끄는 견인차였다.
