강인한 생명력의 상징인 선인장에 담긴 의식과 감성을 담아낸 전시가 열리고 있다. 박지숙 화가의 ‘선인장의 내면의 미와 차가운 질량의 도자기’ 전이다. 마포구 모래내에 소재한 MEK 갤러리에서 11월 21일부터 12월 3일까지 열린다.
선인장은 다육식물이다. 주어진 척박한 환경에 생명을 보존하기 위하여 오랜 진화를 통하여 풍성한 잎을 가시 형태로 퇴화시켜 수분을 끈적한 점액으로 바꾼 오랜 진화의 여정은 생명이라는 관점에서 고난의 예술이다.
헤아려 가면 한층 숙연한 이야기를 품은 속씨식물의 진화사를 만나게 된다. 속씨식물이란 씨앗으로 발달하는 종자식물의 주 씨앗인 밑씨를 씨방 안에 치열하게 보호하여 종을 보존한 눈물겨운 수난사를 가지고 있다.
속씨식물의 치열한 삶을 물려받은 다육식물 선인장의 진화는 정작 아직도 신비로운 존재로 훼손될 수 없는 자연의 신성함을 대표한다. 이러한 선인장은 특이한 형태와 척박한 환경의 강인한 생존력을 상징하여 많은 문학 작품에서 인용하였다.

그중 (시간에 관한 가장 주목할 만한 것은 그것이 완전히 상대적이라는 것이다.-The most notable thing about time is that it is so purely relative.)라는 명문으로 시작되는 미국 작가 오 헨리의 단편소설 선인장(The Cactus)은 짧은 소설 만큼 순간적인 시간에 쏟아지는 이야기를 담은 작품이다.
주인공의 아파트 테이블에 놓인 떠나버린 여인이 선물한 선인장 화분에서부터 시작된 짧은 단편은 다음 문장에서 모든 이야기를 담고 있다.

박지숙 작가는 선인장 식물이 가지고 있는 강인한 생명력의 내면에 품은 미학을 극히 서정적인 시선과 의식으로 해체하였다. 선인장이라는 식물의 실체가 시간의 흐름에 따라 성장하고 변화하는 모습을 우리의 삶과 견주어 어떤 환경에서도 성장하는 강인함을 공유하려는 메시지를 담고 있다. 동화적인 빛깔과 조형의 감성을 추구한 의식에서 확인된다.
작가는 화분에 담긴 선인장이 품은 내면적 의식의 미와 도자기라는 물체의 속성을 대비시킨 작품을 통하여 일상에 존재하는 미학을 승화시키려는 의지를 담고 있다. 작가의 화분에 담긴 선인장은 무한한 존재로 도자기는 의식의 표면이며 선인장은 그 속에서 피어나는 생명력이라는 대비를 통하여 다양한 이질성의 극복을 추구하고 있다. artwww@naver.com
