지난해 12월 30일 세상을 떠난 일본 엔카의 여왕 야시로 아키(八代亜紀) 가수의 송별회가 3월 26일 오후 5시 도쿄 오타구 니시가마타에 소재한 카타 야나기 아레나(片柳アリーナ) 홀에서 약 90분 동안 콘서트 형태로 열린다는 소식이다.
일본의 송별회(お別れの会) 또는 추모회(偲ぶ会)는 장례식을 치른 후 고인에게 다시 작별 인사를 하는 의식이다.
야시로 아키 가수의 송별회에 유난히도 한국 가요를 사랑한 국경이 없는 음악에 대한 열정의 삶을 헤아려 가수의 소중한 면면을 살펴볼 수 있는 음악과 영상을 소개하며 추모의 마음을 담아 헌정한다.
야시로 아키 가수는 2015년 봄 일본의 몽골 대사관 만찬에서 몽골 가수와 배우이며 연출가인 몽골 민주화의 영웅 서서르바람(Сосорбарам, 1958~)을 만났다. 그가 작사하여 불렀던 자마스(Жамаас -JAMAAS) 라는 노래를 듣고 음악에 매료되었다.
자마스(Жамаас)란 역사적으로 진실 또는 진리의 뜻을 품고 있는 복합어다. 2008년 발표되었던 노래는 우주와 자연의 신성한 섭리를 삶과 죽음에 대비한 가사의 음악으로 몽골 국민의 사랑을 받는 노래다.
전율처럼 음악에 매료되었던 야시로 아키 가수는 이 음악을 일본에 전하고 싶은 마음을 알렸다. 이러한 소통에서 서서르바람이 2016년 몽골에서 개최를 준비하는 음악회에 야시로 아키 가수의 참가를 요청하였다. 이를 수락하면서 2015년 8월 야시로 아키는 음악회 개최 장소 답사 일정으로 몽골을 방문하였다.
몽골 방문에서 야시로 아키 가수의 콘서트 개최가 결정되었으며 콘서트 일정에 맞추어 자마스 노래를 새로운 일본어판으로 발표한다는 합의가 이루어졌다. 몽골 예술가 서서르바람이 당시 준비한 음악회는 매년 7월 11일부터 15일까지 몽골 국립 스포츠 경기장에서 열리는 몽골의 최대 축제인 국립 나담 축제이후 열리는 최대 규모의 음악회였다.

몽골에서 돌아온 야시로 아키는 즉시 자마스(Жамаас-JAMAAS)의 일본어판 구상에 들어갔으며 가수의 마음을 깊숙하게 담았던 일본어 가사는 싱어송라이터 이토 카오루(1953~)의 작사에서 빛났다.
이토 카오르는 대만 태생 가수 어우양페이페이가 불러 크게 히트한 LOVE IS OVER 작사 작곡자로 기타리스트와 가수로 활동한 바탕에서 일상적 언어 속에서 맑은 물방울이 튀어 오르는 듯한 음악적 감성이 뛰어난 가사를 쓰는 작사가였다. 이토 카오루는 자마스 원곡에 담긴 정신성을 바탕으로 야시로 아키 가수가 담고 싶었던 여성의 삶을 깊은 감성으로 그려냈다.
편곡은 작곡가 와카쿠사 케이(1949~가 맡았다. 와카쿠사 케이는 도쿠마 재팬 레이블의 엔카 작곡가였던 아버지의 영향으로 어려서부터 음악에 뛰어난 재능을 가지고 있었다. 중, 고등학교 밴드부 활동을 거쳐 클래식을 공부한 와카쿠사 케이는 버클리 음대 출신으로 보사노바를 일본에 알린 와타나베 사다오(1933~)에게서 재즈를 공부하였다. 이어 시적인 작사를 바탕으로 수많은 히트곡을 탄생시킨 작곡가 나카야마 다이사부로(1941~2005) 밑에서 대중가요 편곡을 시작하였다.
나카야마 다이사부로는 가사에 담긴 언어적 감성을 음악적인 그림으로 확대하여 작곡과 편곡의 바탕으로 삼았던 특유의 감각이 뛰어난 작곡가였다. 이러한 영향에서 많은 것을 일깨운 와카쿠사 케이는 여성의 삶이 녹아 있는 자마스 일본어판 가사를 원곡의 흐름을 중시한 대중가요 스타일로 편곡하면서 일본 고유의 전통과 현대적 감성이 투명하게 번져가는 한폭의 수채화로 그려냈다.
덧붙여 나카야마 다이사부로는 한국 남도의 섬 진도의 바닷물이 갈라지는 현대판 모세의 기적을 소재로 연인에 대한 그리움을 노래한 진도 이야기(珍島物語)를 작사 작곡한 인물이다. 1996년 텐도 요시미(1954~)가 불러 130여 만장의 음반이 팔리는 대 히트를 가져왔다.
이렇게 탄생한 자마스의 일본어판 연습에 매진하던 야시로 아키 가수는 2016년 5월 몽골 문화 대사로 임명되었다. 명예직이었지만, 몽골과 일본의 문화 교류를 잇는 소중한 상징성은 큰 주목을 받았다.
2016년 7월 31일 몽골 수도 울란바토르의 몽골 국립 오페라 발레 극장에서 열린 일본 '몽골 문화 교류 공연'에서 야시로 아키 가수는 엔카에서부터 재즈와 블루스에 이르는 17곡의 노래를 불렀다. 공연 중에 자마스의 일본어판 자마스-진실은 둘(JAMAAS-真実はふたつ)이 10월 19일 공식 발매되는 사실을 알리면서 이 노래를 선보여 열광적인 박수를 받았다.
야시로 아키 가수는 문화 교류 공연에 이어 8월 3일 자신의 단독 콘서트를 열었다. 수도 울란바토로에서 100km 지점에 있는 에르데네의 투브 아이막에 있는 몽골제국의 전성기를 재현한 13세기 테마파크에서 열린 가수의 콘서트는 감동적이었다.
‘하늘과 땅에 바치는 노래’라는 주제로 드넓은 초원에서 열린 콘서트는 소수의 현지 관광객과 지역 주민들이 유일한 관람객이었지만, 초원을 달리는 말과 풀을 뜯는 소와 양들이 음악 소리에 몰려드는 진풍경이 벌어졌다.
물도 전기도 없는 대자연 초원에 무대를 설치하고 동력 트럭에서 전기를 공급하여 열린 콘서트는 가수의 삶에서 가장 감동적인 공연이었다. 가수는 훗날 공연에 대한 언급에서 돌아가신 아버지와 치매로 고생하시는 어머니를 생각하며 자마스 노래를 불렀다고 말하였다.
가수는 여러 인터뷰에서 어려서 할아버지와 아버지 무릎에서 들었던 나니와부시(浪花節)로도 부르는 일본의 전통 서민의 창인 료교쿠(浪曲)에 대한 깊은 추억을 늘 이야기하였다. 이러한 사실은 자마스 노래에서 가수가 이를 재현하여 부르는 구절에서 확인된다. 나아가 삶의 진리를 담아낸 원곡을 바탕으로 가수의 삶에서 건져올린 이야기가 녹아내린 노래의 가사는 마치 세상에 전한 메시지처럼 들려온다.
당시 야시로 아키의 공연에 몽골의 전통 예술을 짊어진 몽골의 4인조 남성 팝페라 그룹 우베르투라(Увертюра)의 무대가 선보였다. 이들은 몽골 전통음악을 바탕으로 서양 현대 음악을 접목하여 활동하는 그룹으로 몽골 국내는 물론 세계에서도 주목받는 그룹이다. 이들의 공연에서 자마스(Жамаас)는 대표적인 레퍼토리로 웅장하면서도 서정적 감성이 흥건한 정수를 들려준다.
