병을 치유하려면 근원을 찾아내는 것이 급선무다. 대증요법에 매달리다 보면 병은 깊어지고 생명은 위험에 빠진다.
그래서 좋은 의사는 병의 원인을 규명하기 전에 처방을 하지 않는다. 돌팔이 의사는 원인을 찾기 전에 이 약도 써보고 저 약도 써보다 상황을 악화시키기 일쑤다.
정치도 마찬가지 아닐까?
요즘 대통령 부인 이야기로 온 나라가 시끄럽다. 여당 대표는 김건희 여사의 사과, 활동중단 그리고 검찰의 기소까지 주장하고 나선다. 그래야 민심의 악화를 막고 진정시킬 수 있다는 것이다.
그 정도 처방으로 민심을 되돌릴 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까. 그게 확실한 방도라면 대통령이나 김건희 여사도 거부하지 않을 것이다.
그러나 민심악화의 원인은 김건희 여사가 아니다. 민심이 악화되다 보니 그 분노가 김건희 여사를 출구로 삼았을 뿐이다. 즉 민심악화의 원인은 따로 있고 김건희 여사는 증상에 불과하다.
현 정권의 지도자들은 먼저 민심악화의 근원을 찾아야 한다. 내가 볼 때 그 근원은 문정권의 폭정을 제대로 심판하지 않았고 민생경제가 나빠진 것이다.
여당대표는 정권초기 법무장관으로 일한 사람이다. 그는 문재인 전 정권 폭정심판이라는 국민의 요구를 받들어야 할 위치에 있었다. 그러나 결과는 실망 그 자체였다. 그가 아직도 이 사실을 깨닫지 못한다면 미래는 암담하다.
대통령과 당은 정권의 양축(兩軸)이다. 긴장은 좋지만 분열은 망조다. 정권이 망하고 그 중에 누가 승자가 될 수 있다는 생각은 망상에 불과하다.
