루마니아에는 오랜 역사를 품은 크리스마스 캐럴이 존재한다. 대체로 찬양이라는 뜻으로 해석되는 캐럴은 고대 로마 시대의 둥글게 도는 춤 음악의 역사를 품고 있다.
동유럽 루마니아는 고대의 강국 다키아 왕국 중심지로 2세기 무렵 로마 제국에 의해 정복되면서 4세기 무렵 기독교가 전파되었다. 이후 9세기 중반에 비잔틴 제국의 영향으로 루마니아 정교회가 탄생하였다.
루마니아는 고대 로마 제국의 문화와 지형적인 슬라브 민족의 문화가 역사적으로 융화되었지만. 고유한 특성의 음악을 발전시켜 온 민족이다. 깊은 울림으로 사랑의 감정을 담아내는 고유한 사랑 노래 도로나(Dorona)에서부터 신명의 민속 춤곡 탄체레(Tancere)와 종교적이면서도 영적인 감성을 담아낸 코르도(Cordo)와 같은 민속음악을 발전시켜 왔다.
