조계원 의원은 “여수시가 예비국제회의지구로 선정되면서 여수는 다시 한번 더 남해안 대표 관광도시로 위상과 기반을 갖출 수 있는 기회를 갖게 됐다”라고 환영 입장을 밝혔다.
여수시는 이번 예비국제회의지구로 선정되어 최대 2027년까지 국비를 지원받게 된다.

여수시는 지난 2018년부터 마이스 산업의 현주소를 점검하고 전문가 의견을 수렴해 개선방안과 성장전략을 모색하는 포럼을 지속적으로 개최하는 등 국제 해양관광도시로 도약을 준비해 왔다.
이와 함께 여수시는 지난해 1,262건의 마이스(MICE) 행사로 방문객 42만여 명을 유치해 약 1,475억 원의 경제 유발 효과를 거뒀다.
문체부가 선정하는 ‘예비국제회의지구’는 기존 광역도시 중심의 ‘국제회의복합지구’를 확대해 국제회의 개최 역량이 있는 중소도시를 지원함으로써 지역 국제회의 개최 역량의 균형 발전을 도모하고자 신설한 제도다.
