광복회(회장 이종찬)는 11일, 우리의 독립정신과 대한민국 정체성에 대한 논란을 끝내고 미래세대에 정체성을 명확히 하기 위해 일제시기 한국인의 국적문제를 묻는 내용의 제21대 대선후보에 공개질의서 답변을 요청했다.

광복회는 이 같은 내용의 질의서를 각 후보 진영에 보내면서 오는 23일(금)까지 당과 후보의 입장을 명확히 밝히라고 요구했다.
광복회는 공개질의서에서 지난해 8월 22일 “식민 지배를 정당화하고 대한민국의 정체성을 흐트러뜨리는 일제강점기 국적 논란을 종식시키기 위해 정부에 일제시기 우리 국민의 국적에 대해 공식 질의한 바가 있다”면서 이에 대해 “우리 정부의 입장은 한일 강제병합이 우리 국민의 의사에 반하여 강압적으로 체결되어 원천적으로 무효라는 입장을 일관되게 유지해 왔고, 또 유지해나갈 거라는 외교부의 공식입장을 확인했다”고 밝혔다.
이와 관련, 광복회는 질의서를 통해 각 후보 진영에 “일제의 국권 침탈이 원천적으로 불법·무효인지?” 또 “일제시기 우리 국민의 국적이 한국인 인지?”에 대한 명확한 답변을 요청했다.
이와 관련, 김문수 국민의힘 대선 후보는 지난해 8월 고용노동부 장관 후보자 국회 인사청문회에서 더불어민주당 박홍배 의원 질문에 "나라를 뺏겼으니 당연히 우리 선조의 국적은 일본"이라고 답해 논란을 일으켰다.
