그림이 예향 목포를 대표하던 시대가 있었다. 남종화(南宗畵)의 전통을 이어 갈필(渴筆)의 미학을 개척한 남농 허건 선생은 거친 붓끝에서 자연의 풍상과 인간의 정신을 그려내며 예향 목포의 예술적 정체성을 이끌었다. 남도 야산과 해안의 실경과 거친 붓질의 노송도는 한 시대의 미학이었으며 예향의 영혼이었다.
그 계승과 발전을 추구하는 강금복 작가의 제67회 개인초대전 ‘희망·꿈·상생’이 목포 유달미술관에서 6월 20일 오픈되어 30일까지 열린다. 전시장을 채운 30여 점의 작품은 흩날리는 매화와 세월의 풍상을 품은 소나무 작품이다. 작품들은 인간과 자연, 세대와 세대, 존재와 존재 사이를 잇는 조형적 언어로 공존의 서사를 조용히 드러내며 ‘상생’이라는 철학적 주제를 화폭에 담은 응답이다.

강금복 작가의 매화는 고요한 시간의 끝자락에서 피어난 존재를 상징하고 있다. 보랏빛 배경 위에 떠오른 흰 매화가 빛과 어둠 그리고 시련과 회복이 겹친 감정의 지층을 형성하고 있다. 화면을 따라 흐르는 은색 곡선들은 윤회적 흐름을 연상케 하며 매화가 피기까지의 시간과 그를 둘러싼 기운들을 품고 있다. 작품은 꽃은 결코 혼자 피지 않는다. 누군가의 버팀과 인내의 시간, 그리고 온기가 있어야 피어난다고 말하고 있다.

이러한 의식을 안고 한층 깊숙한 ‘상생’에 대한 시선으로 옮겨가면 작가의 소나무 앞에 서게 된다. 굽고 뒤틀림 속에 희망처럼 허공에 벋은 가지와 청록의 여백은 나무가 품은 시간의 무게를 고스란히 담고 있다. 수많은 생명에게 그늘을 내어주며 살아가지만, 자신은 풍상의 주름만을 간직한 돌봄과 희생 그리고 존재 간의 관계를 상징하는 형상이다.
특히 작가의 소나무 연작은 존재론적 묘사의 집합체로 계승과 상호 돌봄이라는 인간 공동체의 구조를 시각화한 작업으로 읽힌다. 거칠지만 꿋꿋한 붓질과 선과 색의 긴장 그리고 수묵의 절제와 채색의 운율은 모두 보이는 형상 너머의 정신적 지층을 향한다. 그것은 한 사회의 뿌리이며 세대 간 전승과 관계적 윤리를 담은 회화적 서사다.
