[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 제30회 부산국제영화제의 개막작으로 박찬욱 감독의 신작 '어쩔 수 없다'가 선정됐다.
이번 작품은 박찬욱 감독이 2022년 ‘헤어질 결심’ 이후 3년 만에 선보이는 장편영화다. 개막작 '어쩔 수 없다'는 안정된 삶을 누리던 회사원 ‘만수’(이병헌 분)가 갑작스럽게 해고된 후 가족과 집을 지키기 위해 재취업에 나서는 과정을 다룬다. 영화는 개인의 위기 상황과 그로 인한 생존 투쟁을 중심으로 서사를 전개한다.
주연은 배우 이병헌과 손예진이 맡았다. 이병헌은 해고 후 구직에 나서는 주인공 ‘만수’ 역을, 손예진은 가족을 지키려는 아내 ‘미리’ 역을 연기한다. 두 배우는 이번 작품을 통해 부부 역할로 첫 연기 호흡을 맞췄다. 이외에도 박희순, 이성민, 염혜란, 차승원 등이 출연한다.
박찬욱 감독은 2019년 부산국제영화제 참석 당시 ‘어쩔 수 없다’에 대해 “가장 만들고 싶은 이야기”라고 언급한 바 있으며, 이번 작품을 통해 그 구상을 실현했다.
부산국제영화제 측은 “‘어쩔 수 없다’를 제30회 영화제 개막작으로 선정한 것은, 영화제를 찾는 관객과 한국영화계 모두에 의미 있는 작품을 소개하기 위한 결정”이라고 밝혔다. 정한석 집행위원장은 “박찬욱 감독이 오랫동안 구상한 작품을 영화제의 시작에서 관객과 함께할 수 있어 의미 깊다”고 전했다.
박찬욱 감독은 1992년 ‘달은… 해가 꾸는 꿈’으로 데뷔했다. 이후 ‘공동경비구역 JSA’(2000), ‘올드보이’(2003), ‘친절한 금자씨’(2005), ‘아가씨’(2016), ‘헤어질 결심’(2022) 등을 연출했다. 그의 작품은 칸영화제 경쟁 부문에 네 차례 진출했으며, 심사위원대상, 심사위원상, 감독상 등을 수상했다.
제30회 부산국제영화제는 9월 17일(수)부터 9월 26일(금)까지 열리며, 개막작 ‘어쩔 수 없다’는 아시아에서 처음 공개된다.

This marks Park's return to feature filmmaking three years after his 2022 film Decision to Leave. No Other Choice follows the story of Mansu, a man who once led a stable life but is suddenly laid off. In the aftermath, he begins a desperate journey to protect his family and home by seeking re-employment. The film centers on personal crisis and the struggle for survival.
The lead roles are played by Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin. Lee portrays Mansu, the laid-off office worker, while Son plays his wife, Miri, who strives to hold the family together. This marks the first time the two actors appear as a married couple on screen. The cast also includes Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yum Hye-ran, and Cha Seung-won.
Director Park first mentioned No Other Choice at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival, describing it as “the story I most want to tell.” The film is the realization of that long-held vision.
According to the Busan International Film Festival organizers, the decision to select No Other Choice as the opening film was aimed at presenting a work that holds significance for both festival audiences and the Korean film industry. Executive director Jung Han-seok commented, “It is meaningful to be able to share a film that Director Park has long envisioned with audiences on the festival’s opening night.”
Park Chan-wook made his directorial debut in 1992 with The Moon... The Dream of the Sun. His notable works include Joint Security Area (2000), Oldboy (2003), Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005), The Handmaiden (2016), and Decision to Leave (2022). He has competed at the Cannes Film Festival four times, earning awards such as the Grand Prix, the Jury Prize, and Best Director.
The 30th Busan International Film Festival will run from September 17 (Wednesday) to September 26 (Friday), and No Other Choice will have its Asian premiere during the festival.
