창원지검은 지난 2022년 6.1 지방선거에서 불법 정치자금을 조성한 혐의로 수사를 받고 있던 홍 전 시장과 조 전 부시장을 기소하고 캠프관계자 A씨와 B씨도 정치자금법위반으로 불구속 기소하였으며, 이들에게 정치자금을 기부한 12명에 대해서도 약식 기소했다.
검찰은 홍 전 시장과 조 전 부시장 선거캠프 관계자 A씨와 B씨가 공모하여 총 12명으로부터 3억 5,300만원을 선거자금으로 수수한 혐의를 적용했다.
