이재명 대통령이 24일(현지시간) "남북 간 평화 체제가 확고히 구축되면 (한·미 연합훈련을) 안 하는 게 바람직할 것"이라며 "상황 따라 지렛대가 될 수 있고 결과가 될 수도 있는데 지금 당장 말하긴 어렵다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 마지막 방문국 튀르키예 앙카라로 향하는 공군 1호기 기내 기자 간담회에서 “(대한민국은) 전세계 군사력 5위로 평가받는 나라인데 전시작전권도 없으며 외부 지원이 없으면 자체 방위도 못 하는 것처럼 오해를 유발하는 상황을 빨리 개선해야 한다”고 밝혔다.
또 "대한민국이 북한 GDP 1.45배에 이르는 엄청난 규모 국방비를 지출하고 있고, 다른 나라 대비 좀 뛰어난 분야가 많이 있는데 사실 방위 산업 분야는 괄목할 만큼 다른 나라에 비해 상대적 우위를 갖고 있다”며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 “미국에 비할 바는 못되나 사실 미국도 이제는 전투기·전차·잠수함·군함 생산 등에서 상당히 많은 문제를 노출하고 있다”며 “외국 정상들도 방산 얘기를 많이 하는데 매우 놀라워 한다”고 전했다.
이어 "방위 산업 지원·방위 관련 R&D 투자 부분은 경제적으로도 유익할 뿐만 아닌 자체 방위력 강화에도 크게 도움 돼 향후 집중 투자해야 한다”며 “방위비를 장기적으로 GDP 대비 3.5%까지 늘려야 한다는 방침을 밝혔기에 계속 국방비를 증액해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 “방위 산업을 육성하고 방위 산업을 통해 다른 산업을 발전시키고 수출을 확대해야 할 것”이라며 “각국 관심도 높아지고 있어 국가 간 관계를 발전시키는 데도 매우 도움된다고 생각한다”고 했다.
