기로연은 조선시대에 학문과 덕행이 높은 원로 신하들을 위로하고 예우하기 위해 베풀던 연에서 유래된 것으로, 장수를 기원하는 의미를 담고 있다.
군에서는 음성향교가 그 전통을 이어 매년 기로연을 개최하고 있으며, 경로효친 사상과 전통 유교문화 보전에 힘쓰고 있다.
이날 행사는 문묘향배와 축사를 시작으로, 어르신들의 무병장수를 기원하며 술잔을 올리는 헌수(獻壽) 순서로 진행됐다. 이어 국악 공연이 펼쳐져 행사 분위기를 더욱 풍성하게 했다.
조병옥 군수는 “기로연 행사는 경로효친 사상이 쇠퇴하고 있는 오늘날, 어르신 공경의 가치를 되새기는 뜻깊은 자리가 되고 있다”며 “유학의 가치를 이어가며 전통과 예의범절이 살아 숨 쉬는 군을 만들기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
