[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 의령에서 처음 열리는 이색 겨울 축제인 ‘제1회 여꾸섬 빙판썰매축제’가 이달 31일 오후 가례면 요도마을 앞 하천 일원에서 열린다.
이번 축제는 요도마을 주민들이 직접 아이디어를 내고 준비한 행사로 마을이 중심이 된 참여형 축제라는 점에서 의미를 더한다.
이번 행사는 요도마을이 의령군 ‘2026년 어울림 마을축제’ 대상지로 선정되면서 추진되는 소규모 지역축제로 마을 고유의 자원과 이야기를 살려 마련됐다. 군은 축제 운영을 위해 900만 원을 지원했다.
‘여꾸섬’이라는 이름은 요도마을 앞 하천에 자라는 풀 ‘여뀌’를 주민들이 오래전부터 ‘여꾸’라 불러온 데서 비롯됐다.
다리가 놓이기 전 섬처럼 보이던 마을의 옛 모습이 지명에 그대로 담겨 있다. 여꾸섬 뒤편에는 주민들이 예부터 ‘똥뫼’라 불러온 작은 산이 자리하고 있다.
‘똥뫼’는 평지에 홀로 솟은 구릉성 산지를 뜻하는 ‘독뫼’에서 비롯된 말로, 이 산이 하천을 감싸며 겨울철 깊은 음지를 형성한다.

지난해에도 입소문을 타고 500여 명의 방문객이 다녀가는 등 이미 가족 단위 체험 명소로서의 가능성을 보였다.
이호진 요도마을 이장은 “안전을 최우선으로, 여꾸섬을 사계절 즐길 수 있는 체험형 마을로 키워가겠다”며 “가족들이 부담 없이 찾을 수 있는 고향 같은 마을을 만들어 가겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 어울림 마을축제는 마을의 전통과 특성, 지역 자원을 활용한 소규모 축제를 사계절 운영해 주민 화합을 도모하고 인구소멸 위기 지역에 활력을 불어넣기 위해 2022년부터 의령군이 추진해 온 사업이다.
