경북도와 김천시는 지난 27일 김천역 광장에서 이철우 경북도지사, 송언석 국회의원, 배낙호 김천시장 등 주요 관계자와 주민 150여 명이 참석한 가운데 ‘김천역 선상역사 신축 기념식’을 개최했다.

이번 사업은 총사업비 327억 원을 투입해 연면적 3,500㎡, 지상 3층 규모의 현대식 선상역사를 건립하는 프로젝트다. 올해 11월 실시설계를 완료하고, 오는 2027년 하반기 착공을 목표로 하고 있다.
새로운 선상역사가 완공되고 향후 문경~김천 철도 및 남부내륙철도(김천~거제)가 개통되면 김천역의 접근성은 획기적으로 개선될 전망이다. 현재 KTX 미운행으로 서울까지 2시간 30분가량 소요되던 이동 시간은 1시간 10분으로 대폭 단축되며, 거제까지는 1시간 30분이면 도착이 가능해진다.
특히 김천역은 기존 경부선과 경북선에 더해 남부내륙선, 문경~김천 철도, 대경선이 교차하는 ‘사통팔달’의 철도 거점 역할을 수행하게 된다.
단순한 역사를 넘어 도시 재생의 핵심 축 역할도 기대된다. 철도로 단절됐던 구도심과 신도심을 선상역사가 자연스럽게 연결함으로써 지역 간 접근성을 높이고 상권 회복을 견인한다는 구상이다. 역사 내부와 주변에는 상업·문화 시설이 들어서 주민들을 위한 복합 힐링 공간으로 활용될 예정이다.
이철우 경북도지사는 “김천역 선상역사 신축은 지역 철도 이용 환경을 근본적으로 개선하는 계기가 될 것”이라며 “촘촘한 철도망 확충을 통해 경북 전역의 접근성을 높이는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gimcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, is accelerating its growth as a rail transport hub by promoting the construction of a new ship-based station at Gimcheon Station as part of the Southern Inland Railway project.
On the 27th, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gimcheon City held a 'Gimcheon Station Ship-Based Station Construction Ceremony' at Gimcheon Station Plaza.
