소리는 길을 묻지 않는다. 그저 흘러갈 뿐이다. 팔레스타인의 성녀라 불리던 가수 림 바나(Rim Banna)의 노래에서 흐르는 감성은 침묵조차 숨결로 느껴진다.
1966년 나사렛에서 태어난 림 바나는 자신의 운명과도 같은 음악을 일찍 만났다. 그녀는 사라져가던 팔레스타인 전통 동요와 자장가를 수집하여 새로운 멜로디를 입혀 세상에 다시 놓았다. 오늘날 팔레스타인 어린이들 입술에 붙어 있는 노래들이다. 그녀 자신은 이를 문화적 자기 증명이라고 말하였다.
림 바나 가수는 소리로 싸우는 예술가였다. 점령지의 현실과 자유를 막아선 검문소와 철조망 그리고 부서진 마을과 실종된 이름들 속에서 그녀의 노래는 대신 울어주었으며 그 울음은 전쟁보다 강하게 전해졌다. 그녀는 가자지구에 갈 수 없었지만, 그녀의 노래는 SNS를 통하여 봉쇄된 도시에 닿았으며 유럽의 여러 무대에서 그녀를 초청하였다.
2001년 9월 11일 화요일 아침 미국의 친이스라엘 중동 정책에 대항하는 이슬람 과격 테러 단체인 알카에다가 일으킨 천인공노할 만행의 자살 테러 공격으로 세계는 충격에 빠졌다. 다음 해 2002년 1월 29일 조지 W. 부시 미국 대통령은 ‘악의 축(Axis of Evil)’이라는 국정연설에서 이라크, 이란, 북한을 지목했다. 이 발언은 세계에 큰 파장을 일으켰다. 이때 노르웨이 키르켈리 쿨투르베르크스테드 레이블 설립자이며 음악 프로듀서 에리크 힐레스타(Erik Hillestad)는 음악적 반전(反戰) 메시지를 기획했다.
악의 축으로 지목된 이란, 이라크, 북한, 쿠바, 리비아, 시리아와 분쟁 지역 팔레스타인, 아프가니스탄 여성 가수들을 초청하여 ‘악의 축에서 온 자장가(Lullabies from the Axis of Evil) 프로젝트를 기획하였다. 이는 그 어느 땅에서도 폭력과 무관한 어머니의 자장가로 평화를 추구한 것이다. 당시 각 나라의 여성 가수가 모국어로 노래한 자장가를 서방 가수들이 듀엣으로 참가하여 영어로 해석하여 함께 부른 15곡이 실린 음반은 2004년 발매되어 세계의 주목을 받았다. 당시 림 반나는 ‘끝나지 않는 이 밤(Ya Lel Ma Atwalak)’을 노르웨이 가수 카리 브렘네스와 잠들어라, 나의 인형아(Nami Ya La'aubi)를 덴마크 가수 아니세트(Annisette)와 함께 불러 큰 울림을 전하였다.
기획자 에리크 힐레스타가 어느 인터뷰에서 림 바나 가수에 대하여 다음과같이 회고하였다.
“예루살렘에서 나사렛으로 돌아오던 겨울밤 그녀를 만났다. 가수는 세 아이의 젊은 어머니였으며 그중 두 아이는 갓난 쌍둥이였다. 그녀는 조용히 마이크 앞에 섰고 나는 고성능 디지털 녹음기(DAT)의 스위치를 눌렀다. 그녀가 노래를 부르기 시작한 첫 구절 나는 단 하나의 단어도 이해하지 못한 채 눈물이 흘렀다. 그 첫 녹음이 그대로 음반에 실렸다.”
참고로 당시 프로젝트에 참여한 북한 가수는 이선주(Sun Ju Lee)였으며 북한 자장가 ‘별이 떠오른다(Stars Are Rising)’를 스코틀랜드의 싱어송라이터 에디 리더(Eddi Reader)와 함께 불렀다. 기획자 에리크 힐레스타의 기록에 의하면 북한 가수 이선주는 당시 35세로 평양에 있는 세계적인 작곡가 윤이상 음악연구소에서 활동하는 음악가였다.

Born in Nazareth in 1966, Rim Banna encountered music—her destiny—early. She collected disappearing Palestinian traditional nursery rhymes and lullabies, gave them new melodies, and released them back into the world. These are the songs that cling to the lips of Palestinian children today. She herself described this as a form of cultural self-affirmation.
Singer Rim Banna was an artist who fought with sound. Amidst the reality of occupied territories, the checkpoints and barbed wire that blocked freedom, and the broken villages and missing names, her songs wept on their behalf, and that weeping was conveyed more powerfully than the war itself. Although she could not go to the Gaza Strip, her songs reached the besieged city through social media, and she was invited to perform on various stages in Europe.
On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the world was shocked by heinous suicide attacks perpetrated by Al-Qaeda, an Islamic extremist terrorist group opposing the U.S.'s pro-Israel Middle East policy. The following year, on January 29, 2002, U.S. President George W. Bush singled out Iraq, Iran, and North Korea in his State of the Union address titled "Axis of Evil." “I met her on a winter night while returning from Jerusalem to Nazareth. The singer was a young mother of three, two of whom were newborn twins.
