포스코청암재단은 25일 서울 포스코센터에서 시상식을 열고, 올해 신설한 ‘청암히어로즈’의 첫 수상자로 김종원 인제고려병원 원장(60)을 선정했다고 밝혔다.
‘청암히어로즈’는 사회 곳곳의 사각지대에서 헌신하며 선한 영향력을 실천해 온 ‘일상 속 영웅’을 발굴·지원하기 위해 마련된 시상제도다. 기존 포스코청암상이 글로벌 사회문제 해결과 이웃사랑, 사회정의 실현에 기여한 개인 및 기관을 대상으로 하는 ‘명예의 전당’ 성격이라면, 청암히어로즈는 지역 현장에서 공동체를 지키는 실천가를 조명하는 데 초점을 맞췄다. 위기 상황에서 생명을 구한 의인을 선정하는 ‘포스코히어로즈’와도 차별화된다.
수상자로 선정된 김종원 원장은 고려대학교 의과대학을 졸업한 정형외과 전문의로, 대도시 대신 인구 3만여 명의 의료 취약지인 강원 인제에 터를 잡고 25년간 지역 주민의 건강을 책임져 왔다. 그가 운영하는 인제고려병원은 지역 내 유일한 병원급 의료기관으로, 응급환자 발생 시 사실상 최후의 의료 안전망 역할을 수행하고 있다.
김 원장은 만성적인 의료 인력 부족과 경영난 속에서도 24시간 응급실 운영을 유지하고 있으며, 경제적 이유로 치료를 포기하는 환자가 없도록 비급여 진료비를 낮게 책정하는 등 ‘생명 우선’의 의료 철학을 실천해 왔다. 최근에는 지역 내 산부인과 공백을 해소하기 위해 외래 진료를 개설하는 등 필수의료 유지에도 힘쓰고 있다.
재단 관계자는 “김종원 원장은 보이지 않는 현장에서 청암정신을 실천해 온 대표적 인물”이라며 “청암히어로즈를 통해 발굴된 인물이 향후 포스코청암상 수상으로 이어지는 선순환 구조를 구축해 사회적 가치를 확산해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 포스코청암재단은 앞으로도 지역사회 소외 해소와 공동체 가치 회복에 기여한 인물을 지속적으로 발굴해 ‘청암히어로즈’ 시상을 이어갈 계획이다.

Inje Goryeo Hospital, which he operates, is the only hospital-level medical institution in the region and serves as the de facto last line of defense for medical safety nets in the event of an emergency.
Despite chronic shortages of medical personnel and financial difficulties, Director Kim has maintained 24-hour emergency room operations and practiced a medical philosophy of "life first," such as setting low non-covered medical fees to ensure no patient forfeits treatment due to financial reasons. Recently, he has also been striving to maintain essential medical services, such as by opening an outpatient clinic to address the gap in OB/GYN services in the area.
A foundation official stated, "Director Kim Jong-won is a representative figure who has practiced the Cheongam spirit behind the scenes," adding, "We will expand social values by establishing a virtuous cycle where individuals discovered through Cheongam Heroes lead to future POSCO Cheongam Awards."
