수림문화재단이 매년 40세 이하 예술가를 선정하여 지원하는 2021년 수림아트랩 전통음악 분야에 선정된 한국 전통 타악기 연주자 김초롱의 독주회 ‘사방으로 열린 문’이 9월 10일 오후 7시 서울 홍릉에 소재한 김희수아트센터 SPACE 1 에서 열린다.
한국예술종합학교 전통원 출신인 김초롱은 크로스오버 국악 그룹 고래야 멤버로 10여 년 넘게 활동하면서 국내와 해외의 많은 공연과 4장의 정규 음반을 발표한 아티스트이다. 2020년 첫 번째 독주회 “문밖으로”를 시작으로 솔로 연주자로 활동을 시작하였다. 김초롱은 국내는 물론 많은 해외 공연에서 얻은 다양한 경험을 바탕으로 한국 전통 타악기를 통한 소리의 울림을 세계인의 가슴에 전할 수 있는 현대적 방향을 매만져오며 타악기 중심의 창작곡을 스스로 작업하고 있다.
오는 10일 열리는 김초롱의 두 번째 독주회 ‘사방으로 열린 문’은 한국 전통 타악이 나아갈 수 있는 방향에 대한 깊은 의식을 담은 공연이다. 김초롱은 이번 독주회 공연에서 대표적인 전통 타악기 북과 장구 그리고 꽹과리와 징을 활용한 연주를 통하여 반주 악기의 고정된 관념을 벗어나 전통 타악의 현대적 감성을 자유롭게 담아내는 연주를 선보인다.
김초롱의 독주회에는 최휘선(양금), 김슬지(아쟁), 한지수(생황) 등이 게스트로 출연하여 음악의 중심을 이끌어가는 김초롱의 타악기 연주에 다양한 악기와 어우러진 조화와 균형의 울림을 선사한다. 또한, 김초롱은 타악기 연주 외에도 개량 악기 철현금을 직접 연주한다.
지난 2020년 김초롱의 첫 독주회 “문밖으로”가 전통 타악의 새로운 세계로 나서는 출발이었다면 이번 독주회의 작품 ‘사방으로 열린 문’은 한국의 타악이 나아갈 수 있는 무한한 방향성 제시에 중점을 두었다. 이는 김초롱이 전통 타악기 연주자로 활동하여 오면서 매만져온 깊은 의식과 맞닿아있다. 바로 우리나라 전통 타악의 대표적인 악기인 북과 장구가 오랜 역사 동안 전통음악의 시작과 끝을 이루는 악기였지만, 정작 단일 악기로 대중에게 사랑스럽게 다가서지 못한 점에 대한 깊은 의식이 있었음을 의미한다.
김초롱이 연주하는 전통 타악기 중 장구는 판소리를 제외한 모든 정악에서의 합주는 물론 민요와 산조 그리고 시나위와 병창에서부터 민속악과 무속음악의 반주를 맡는 악기이다. 나아가 정악에서 좌고와 함께 장구가 내는 소리는 모든 연주의 안내자와 같은 역할을 하며 다양한 국악에서 장구가 양손으로 동시에 치는 ‘합 장단-덩’은 악절의 시작을 알리는 신호이다. 나아가 다양한 합주에서 장구의 반주 장단은 모든 악기가 박자를 맞추는 기준이 된다.
필자는 이와 같은 관점에서 전통 타악기 연주자 김초롱의 연주를 다양한 자료를 통하여 면밀하게 살펴보면서 그가 추구하고 고민하는 문제에 대하여 깊은 공감을 갖게 되었다. 이는 김초롱 연주자가 보편적으로 연주하는 국악 타악기 북, 장구, 징, 꽹과리 즉 사물놀이 구성 타악기는 음고(音高-pitch) 즉 음의 높이와 두 음의 음고 차이 즉 음정도 존재하지 않는 무율악기이다.
여기서 살펴 가야 할 대목이 서양 음악 즉 현대 음악의 리듬(rhythm)과 전통음악의 장단에 대한 이해이다. 리듬이란 음악의 장단이나 강약의 정형화된 흐름이며 장단(長短)은 음악의 박자와 리듬의 형태를 말한다. 중요한 사실은 서양의 리듬은 인간의 걸음걸이 즉 보폭을 바탕으로 생겨났으며 우리 전통음악의 장단은 호흡을 바탕으로 생성된 점이다.
김초롱 아티스트는 이러한 차이와 문제에 대하여 깊은 의식을 가지고 많은 실험적 작업을 추구하여왔다. 2020년 아트홀 가얏고을에서 열었던 첫 번째 독주회 “문밖으로”에서 자신이 작곡한 ‘바람’, ‘두둥 탁’, ‘붉은 하늘’, ‘쇠와 거문고’, ‘도깨비 춤’ 연주는 젊은 김초롱 아티스트의 소중함을 일깨운 면면이 많았다.
‘바람’ 곡에서는 순백한 울림을 품고 있었으며 ‘도깨비 춤’에 녹아내린 신명은 에너지가 가득하면서도 격조가 있었다. 더욱 중요한 사실은 타악의 단선적인 음과 음 사이의 여백을 메꾸어가는 실험적인 감성이 뛰어나 여백과 여운의 미학이 우리의 전통 타악으로 가능하다는 사실을 일깨워주고 있었다.
이러한 바탕을 딛고 코로나19 재난 시대를 맞아 예약제의 제한된 인원으로 열리는 연주회이지만, 젊은 열정으로 민족의 정신과 애환을 품은 전통타악의 무한한 가능성을 제시하는 김초롱 아티스트의 두 번째 독주회 ‘사방으로 열린 문’에 거는 기대는 크다.

Traditional percussionist Kim Cho-rong’s solo recital ‘A door that opens in all directions’ pays attention

Cho-rong Kim, a Korean traditional percussionist who was selected in the traditional music field of the Surim Art Lab in 2021, where the Surim Cultural Foundation selects and supports artists under the age of 40 every year, will be held on September 10 at 7 pm in Hongneung, Seoul. It will be held at Heesoo Kim Art Center, SPACE 1.
Cho-rong Kim, a graduate of the Korean National University of Arts and Tradition, is an artist who has been active as a member of the crossover Korean traditional music group Goeaya for over 10 years and has released many performances in Korea and abroad and 4 regular albums. She started her career as a soloist, starting with her first recital “Out of the Door” in 2020. Kim Chorong is working on his own creations centered on percussion instruments, creating a modern direction to convey the resonance of sound through traditional Korean percussion instruments to the hearts of people around the world based on his diverse experiences from domestic as well as many overseas performances.
Kim Chorong's second recital, 'The Door Opened to All Sides', to be held on the 10th, is a performance that contains a deep awareness of the direction in which traditional Korean percussion music can go. In this recital performance, Chorong Kim presents a performance that freely captures the modern sensibility of traditional percussion, breaking away from the fixed notions of accompaniment instruments, through performances using her representative traditional percussion instruments, drum and janggu, and kwaenggwari and gong.
Choi Hwi-seon (Yang Geum), Kim Seul-ji (Ajaeng), Han Ji-soo (Saenghwang), etc. appear as guests in Kim Chorong's recital. . In addition, Cho-Rong Kim plays the improved instrument, Cheol-Kam, in addition to her percussion.
If Chorong Kim’s first recital in 2020 “Out of the Door” was the start of a new world of traditional percussion, this recital’s work, ‘The Door Opened in All Directions’ focused on suggesting the infinite direction for Korean percussion music. This is in line with her deep consciousness, which Chorong Kim has touched as her traditional percussionist. It means that the drum and janggu, the representative instruments of Korean traditional percussion, were instruments that formed the beginning and end of traditional music for a long time, but there was a deep awareness of the fact that they did not approach the public lovingly with a single instrument.
Among the traditional percussion instruments played by Kim Chorong, Janggu is an instrument that accompanies folk music and shamanic music from folk songs, sanjo, sinawi and byeongchang as well as ensembles in all jeongak music except pansori. Furthermore, in Jeongak, the sound made by janggo along with jwago acts as a guide for all performances, and in various Korean traditional music, ‘hapjangdan-deng’, played simultaneously with both hands, signals the beginning of a passage. Furthermore, in various ensembles, the accompaniment rhythm of Janggu is the standard for all instruments to match the tempo.
From this point of view, I came to have a deep sympathy for the problems he pursued and troubled by closely examining the performances of the traditional percussionist Kim Chorong through various materials. This is a percussion instrument composed of drum, janggu, gong, and samulnori, which is commonly played by Kim Cho-rong, is a non-rhythmic instrument that has no pitch, that is, the pitch of the two notes and the pitch difference between them.
What we need to look at here is the understanding of Western music, that is, the rhythm of modern music and the rhythm of traditional music. Rhythm refers to the standardized flow of the rhythm or rhythm of music. The important fact is that Western rhythms were created based on human gait, that is, stride length, and the rhythm of our traditional music was created based on breathing.
Artist Chorong Kim has pursued many experimental works with a deep awareness of these differences and problems. More importantly, the experimental sensibility of filling in the blank spaces between notes of percussion is excellent, reminding us that the aesthetics of blank spaces and lingering sounds are possible with our traditional percussion music.
It is a concert that is held with a limited number of people by reservation in the era of the Corona 19 disaster, but with young passion, Kim Chorong's second recital, 'The Door Opened' Expectations are high.
