먼 이국의 슬픈 소식이 한국에 까지 전해졌다. 한 편의 드라마와 같은 많은 이야기가 있는 미국에 계시는 Sookie Huskey 선생님 부군 Han Huskey 님이 오랜 투병 끝에 세상을 떠나신 부음이었다. 오랜 인연이 있는 가수 조영남 씨가 조가를 영상으로 헌정하고 조문을 고려하였으며, 미국에 거주하시다 현재 한국에 와 계시는 김지미 선생님이 장례식에 참석하려 19일 미국으로 가실 만큼 문화와 예술에 깊은 사랑과 열정을 보이신 부부이셨다.
필자가 경제연구소에 근무하면서 우리나라 산업의 선구적인 역사를 정리하며 6.25 전쟁 중에 재래방식의 통조림 공장을 인수하여 식품 보관을 위한 선구적인 길을 열었던 인물을 살핀 적이 있었다. 바로 그분의 따님이 Sookie Huskey 선생님이었다.
Sookie Huskey 선생님은 대학 졸업 후 미국에 건너가 결혼하여 뛰어난 비즈니스 역량을 가진 부군의 사업이 성공하면서 LA 한인사회에 널리 알려진 성공한 부부의 표상이었다. Han Huskey 선생님은 LA 지역 예술 서포터즈 단체인 카파미술재단 창립 멤버로 문화와 예술에 대한 깊은 관심과 열정적인 후원을 아끼지 않았다. 나아가 한국계 학생들에게 장학금을 지원하는 오랜 역사의 한미장학재단에 1990년 이사에 선임되었으며 1997년 서부 지역 회장과 모금위원장으로 취임하여 열정적인 활동과 후원을 아끼지 않으셨다.
Han Huskey(한용환) 선생님은 한미 역사에 상징적인 분이시다. Han Huskey 선생은 1949년 서울에서 치과의사인 부친의 아들로 태어났다. 그러나 다음 해 1950년 6.25 전쟁이 일어나 부친이 납북되었다. 이후 어머니와 일본으로 건너갔다. 당시 일본 대사관에서 근무하였던 어머니가 미국 외교관 리처드 허스키(Richard Huskey)와 재혼하여 5살 때 미국으로 건너갔다. 이후 낳아 주신 아버지를 이은 한국 이름 한용환과 길러주신 아버지의 이름을 물려받은 (한 허스키(Han Huskey)가 되었다.

이와 같은 역사의 이야기를 이어 3명의 아들인 유명 셰프인 장남 브라이언 허스키(Brian Huskey-한승진)와 회계사인 차남 앤드루 허스키(Anedrew Huskey-한승철). 변호사인 3남 크리스트퍼 허스키(Christopher Huskey-한승철)가 모두 아버지의 뒤를 이어 한국 이름과 미국인 할아버지의 이름을 지키고 있다.
특히 장남 브라이언 허스키(Brian Huskey)는 명문대학 경제학을 전공하고 요리학교에 다시 입학하여 미국에서 널리 알려진 유명 셰프가 되었다. 그는 지난 2013년 미국 유명 요리 경연 프로그램인 BRAVO 채널의 Top Chef 시즌 11에서 한국의 유자 주스와 아시아적 풍미를 활용한 신선한 팁으로 셰프의 빠른 감각과 실력을 동시에 검증하는 퀵 파이어 챌린지 우승을 두 번이나 거머쥐면서 결승에 올라 한인사회는 물론 미전역의 주목을 받았다.
이후 웨스트 할리우드의 오랜 역사를 가진 유명 레스토랑 포모사(Formosa Café)의 요청으로 새로운 감각의 메뉴를 컨설팅하여 옛 명성을 새롭게 혁신하는 주인공이 되었다.
100여 년의 역사를 품은 포모사 레스토랑은 냉혹한 개성의 연기파 배우 험프리 보가트(1899~1957)와 서부영화의 영원한 별 존 웨인(1907~1979)과 감미로운 소리를 깊숙하게 전달하는 크루닝 창법으로 20세기 미국 대중 음악을 관통한 가수 프랭크 시내트라(1915~1998)는 물론 세상에서 가장 아름다운 여자의 몸에 갇힌 영혼으로 평가받은 개성파 여배우 에바 가드너(1922~1990)와 24살 안타까운 삶으로 세상을 떠난 후 최초로 사후에 아카데미 연기상 후보에 오른 전설의 배우 제임스 딘(1931~1955)그리고 로큰롤의 제왕 엘비스 프레슬리(1935~1977)가 늘 들렸던 전설적인 레스토랑 카페였다.
이후 브라이언 허스키는 뉴포트 비치에 레스토랑을 오픈하여 오렌지 코스트 매거진의 2016년 최고의 새로운 레스토랑과 2017년 올해의 최고 레스토랑에 연속 선정되었다.
또한, 셰프 브라이언 허스키는 올해 7월 말 부모님의 나라 한국에서부터 중국과 일본 그리고 태국과 베트남에 이르는 아시아 최고의 요리책(Asia Ultimate Cookbook)을 출판하여 아마존 베스트 셀러에 올랐다. 아버지의 생전에 드린 가장 큰 선물이었다.
