최교진 세종시교육감이 2022 개정 교육과정에서 5·18민주화운동이 삭제한 것에 대해 "민주시민교육이 후퇴한 것"이라며 시정을 촉구했다.
최교진 교육감은 5일 성명을 통해 "교육부가 2022개정 교육과정에서 5·18민주화운동을 삭제해 고시한 것에 대해 강한 우려를 표했다.
최 교육감은 “5·18민주화운동은 우리나라의 민주주의 발전 과정에서 독재 정권의 민주주의의 유린과 그에 맞서 시민들이 전개한 민주주의의 숭고한 정신이 담겨 있다”라고 말했다.
이어, “이미 그 숭고한 정신을 기리기 위해 법정기념일로도 지정되어 있고, 관련 기록물 역시 유네스코 세계기록유산에 등재되는 등 그 역사적 의의는 후대에도 길이 남길만한 가치로 인정받고 있다”라고 강조했다.
그러면서, “5·18민주화운동에 담긴 민주주의의 정신과 가치를 개정 교육과정에 명시화해 미래 사회를 살아갈 우리 학생들에게 민주주의에 대한 지향이 갖는 역사적 의미가 지속될 수 있길 요청한다”라고 촉구했다.
