산청군은 산청읍 차탄리 유기농 탑라이스 재배단지에서 긴꼬리투구새우가 발견됐다고 20일 밝혔다.
지난 2004년 처음 모습을 드러낸 이후 20년 연속 출현이다.
특히 평년보다 다소 늦은 출현이지만 매우 왕성한 활동으로 역대 최대 개체수가 발견됐다.
긴꼬리투구새우는 포식성이 매우 강하고 다리를 이용해 흙을 휘젓고 다니며 먹이를 찾는다.
이런 습성 때문에 흙탕물로 햇빛을 차단해 잡초의 성장을 억제, 잡초를 자연스럽게 제거하며 해충유충을 먹이로 삼아 해충발생을 억제하는 등 유기농법의 일등 공신으로 손꼽히고 있다.
농약과 화학비료 사용 등으로 1960년대 이후 자취를 감췄지만 유기농 친환경 농법을 장기간 도입한 오대환 산청탑라이스협회장의 경작지에서 2004년 다시 확인됐다.
지난 2005년에는 발효된 야생동·식물보호법에 따라 환경부가 멸종위기 야생동물 2급으로 지정되기도 했다.
이후 개체수 증가로 멸종위기종 지정이 2012년 해제됐지만 여전히 친환경농업 여부를 인정받는 중요한 잣대로 평가받는다.
친환경 농법을 도입하고 있는 지역을 중심으로 서식지가 전국적으로 확대되고 있다.
산청군 관계자는 “긴꼬리투구새우가 자연적으로 발생하는 친환경지역을 유지하기 위해 해마다 유기농 탑라이스 재배단지 지원사업을 실시하고 있다”며 “유기농 탑라이스 재배단지는 긴꼬리투구새우뿐만 아니라 도롱뇽, 풍년새우 등 청정 환경에서만 서식하는 다양한 생물들이 생태계를 이루고 있다”고 말했다.
한편 유유기농인증 GPA인증 이력추적등록까지 획득한 유기농 탑라이스 재배단지는 국내 최고의 품질의 쌀을 안정적으로 생산하는 곳이다.
장기간 유기농 친환경 농법을 도입한 결과 농약과 비료 사용량을 크게 줄인 것은 물론 고품질 쌀 생산으로 소비자들에게 인기를 끌고 있다.
지난 2012년 농림축산식품부 최고품질 쌀 생산단지 평가회에서 최우수 단지로 선정된바 있으며 2015년 국가인증 농식품 명품대회에서 곡류부분 최우수상을 수상하기도 했다.
오대환 회장은 “긴꼬리 투구새우의 출현으로 잡초와 해충 방지에 큰 효과를 보고 있다. 경제적인 효과뿐 아니라 유기농쌀의 품질 유지 측면에서도 일등 공신이라 볼 수 있다”며 “처음 발견됐을 때는 해충으로 여겼지만 지금은 최고 품질의 유기농 벼 생산 상징이 됐다”고 말했다.
