나라의 정신 한글 창제를 기념하는 한글날 주간을 맞아 해외 주요 나라에서도 우리의 문화를 알리는 다양한 행사가 열리고 있다. 그중 주영한국문화원(원장 선승혜)이 주관하는 행사는 대표적이다.
주영한국문화원은 영국 북서부 도시 프레스턴의 센트럴랭커셔대학교와 세계적인 명문 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 ‘한국의 날’ 축제를 10월 11일과 14일 개최한다.
‘한국의 날’ 축제는 주영한국문화원이 지난 2019년 5월 남서부 도시 웨일스에서 처음 시작한 행사로 연중 4회 영국 주요 거점 도시에서 하루 동안 한국의 전통문화, 한복, 한식, 케이팝 등을 직접 체험해 보는 현지인 참여형 행사이다. 특히 해당 지역 주요 대학교와 협력하여 영국 내의 자발적 한류 확산을 도모하여 온 행사로 그 의미는 크다.
지난 4월 29일 셰필드 대학교와 협력하여 2023 셰필드 한국의 날 축제를 열었으며 6월 3일에는 영국 잉글랜드 북부 요크에서 요크 세인트존 대학교와 협력하여 요크 한국의 날을 개최하였다.
오는 10월 11일 영국 북서부 도시 프레스턴 센트럴 랭커셔대학교에서 열리는 한국의 날 축제는 지난 2019년에 이어 4년 만에 다시 개최되는 행사로 현지의 기대가 크다는 소식이다.

프레스턴의 센트럴 랭커셔대학교와 협력하는 프레스턴 한국의 날 축제는 전통의 신라 앙상블 공연과 K-pop 댄스 공연을 시작으로 공기놀이, 딱지치기, 제기차기, 팽이 돌리기와 같은 우리의 전통 놀이문화 체험 마당을 연다. 이어 한국 젓가락 사용과 전통 한복 입어보기를 통하여 한국 문화의 특성을 살피게 하면서 특별 프로그램으로 서예 캘리그래피 체험과 게임형 프로그램으로 경복궁을 체험하고 전통 궁중을 탐방하는 프로그램이 마련된다.

14일에는 명문 옥스퍼드 대학교와 협력하여 옥스퍼드 대학교에서는 최초인 ‘한국의 날’ 축제가 열린다. 한식 도시락과 한과와 같은 전통 한국 음식을 체험하고 다양한 전통 놀이 체험과 함께 K-팝 공연이 펼쳐진다.
특히 이번 행사에서는 세계적 권위가 있는 옥스퍼드 영어 사전에 한류와 한복과 같은 한국어 전통 단어 등재를 위해 노력하고 있는 조지은(Jieun Kiaer) 옥스퍼드대 한국어·언어학과 교수의 특별 강연이 마련되었다. 조교수는 한글의 어원적 특징과 기원에서부터 인공지능 시대에 진화하는 한글의 역할에 강연한다.
또한, 프레젠테이션 강의를 통하여 조선조 후기 실학자이며 문신으로 고구마 재배법 종저보를 저술한 서유구(1764~1845)가 전통 음식의 조리법을 정리한 정조지(鼎俎志)에 기록된 주요한 한국 전통 음식 레시피를 소개한다.
재외 한국문화원 수는 현재 세계 주요나라에 35곳이 개설되어 있다. 그중 주영한국문화원은 우리의 문화와 예술에 담긴 고유한 정신과 높은 수준을 현지에 알리는 다양한 프로그램을 성공적으로 개최해 온 대표적인 문화원이다.
