필자(문일석 르포작가. 본지 발행인)는 “나는 정명석을 만나러 간다”는 저자입니다. 10월22일 저녁시간, JMS(기독교복음선교회) 내부 매체(유튜브 동영상)와 인터뷰를 가졌습니다.
필자는 이 인터뷰에서 일부 언론의 JMS 정명석 목사의 1만명 성폭행 보도에 대해 '가짜뉴스'라는 견해를 밝혔습니다.
이 인터뷰에서 "미국 언론의 경우, 성폭행 사건을 보도할 때 폭행자와 피폭행자의 신분을 공개합니다. ‘1만명 성폭행’이 미국에서 보도되려면 수사 단계에서 1만 명의 피해자 명단, 일시, 장소 등의 ‘피해자 리스트’가 작성되어 그 명단이 재판부에 넘어가야 해요. 그런데 아직도 확실히 안 나오고 있죠. 성폭행 피해자 1만명의 명단이 공개된다면 저는 그때서야 그 말을 믿을 것 같습니다.(웃음) 물론 그런 일은 절대로 일어나지 않았겠지요. 약간의 사법적 판결은 있을 수 있으나, 1만여 명에 달한다는 성폭행 뉴스는 가짜 중의 가짜라고 생각합니다."라고, 강조했습니다.
이어 "기독교복음선교회 교인들이 장외 시위와 100만 탄원서 서명운동을 벌이는 이유는 명명백백합니다. 그동안 일부 언론에게 당한 왜곡-과장보도로 인한 피해를 없애달라는 요구라고 생각합니다. 이런 운동은 국가를 위한 애국운동이기도 합니다. 대한민국 남자 한 사람이 1만명에 달하는 여성을 성폭행 했다는 가짜뉴스가 세계로 전파됐습니다. 한국인을 망신시키는 가짜 뉴스입니다. 이를 바로잡아야 합니다."라고 피력했습니다.

1. 세간의 이슈가 된 종교단체 JMS에 대해 긍정적 보도를 하게 된 이유는?
▲지난 3월초 소위 OTT 저널이라는 ‘넷플릭스’에 ‘나는 신이다’는 프로가 방영됐습니다. 내용상 반향이 컸습니다. 이 프로의 방영 이후, 정명석 목사님에 대해서 경천동지(驚天動地)할, 언론의 보도물들이 쏟아졌습니다. 정명석 목사님은 이미 지난 2022년 10월28일 준 성폭행 사건 구속(미결수)된 상태였습니다.
이 사건을 이야기하면, 3월14일 OO라디오에 반 JMS 활동가의 방송출연이 있었습니다. 이와 관련, A일보는 지난 3월14일자 보도기사에서 “K교수는 14일 OO라디오 ‘이슈 앤 피플’ 인터뷰에서 피해자 규모를 묻는 진행자의 말에 '평소 정명석이 했던 말이 ‘나는 1만명을 성적 구원을 통해 하늘의 애인으로 만드는 게 지상 목표’였다'라며 '즉 1만명을 성폭행하는 게 목표라고 본인 스스로 얘기를 해 왔고, 제가 그 사람의 행태를 관측해 온 결과로는 그 사람은 오로지 성폭행에 매진했던 사람이기 때문에 그 사람의 목표를 초과 달성하지 않았을까 생각한다'고 밝혔다”고 보도했습니다. 이 신문은 “K교수는 이어 '지금 나서서 고소하신 분은 백사장에 있는 모래 한 줌이 되지 않을까'라고 말했다.”고 덧붙였습니다.
이 보도 내용을 단순하게 '산수(算數)'로 계산하면 “성폭행 숫자가 1만명을 초월했다”로 읽혀집니다. 이 보도 이후 현직 검찰총장은 지난 3월6일 “피고인에게 범행에 상응하는 엄정한 형벌을 받게 하겠다”라고 발언했습니다. 검찰총장의 발언을 다시금 뜯어보면 “'피고인에게 범행에 상응하는 엄정한 형벌을 받게 하겠다'라고 말했으니, '범행이 없으면 처벌하지 않겠다'”로 재(再) 해석할 수도 있습니다.
3월초 그야말로 경천동지할 급의 언론 보도가 쏟아졌습니다. 브레이크뉴스, 저희 매체도 처음엔 그런 보도를 좀 했었죠. 그런데 한 라디오 뉴스의 과장-가짜보도가 이를 깼습니다.
50년째 기자생활을 해오면서 이 뉴스를 접한 순간, ‘정명석은 덫에 빠진 게 아닐까’ 란 생각이 뇌리를 스쳤습니다. 기자로서의 상상이 떠나질 않더라고요. 이 말대로라면 남자 1인이 1만명을 성폭행했다는 소리인데, 경악할 일이죠.
그야말로 숫자를 어마어마하게 부풀린 것입니다. 그때부터 정명석 목사에 대한 보도의 진실이 무언지를 들여다보게 됐습니다.
정명석 목사님이 지금 같은 상황에 처한 이유는 기득권 종교 세력의 치밀한 견제를 받았을 수 있습니다. 내부 혹은 이탈세력이 놓은 덫에 걸렸을 수도 있다고 봅니다.
대한한국 사회가 한 사람에게 수 만명이 성폭행당할 정도로 어수룩하진 않습니다.

2. JMS 정명석 목사님과 원래부터 알던 사이인가요?
▲정명석 목사님을 직접 만난 지 굉장히 오래됐습니다. 40년도 더 전인 1979년이네요. 인쇄소에서 일하던 친구가 같이 가보자기에 한 작은 건물의 부흥회에 갔습니다. 사람들이 옹기종기 모여있는 곳 가운데 한 청년이 강연을 하더라고요. 그 분이 정명석 목사님 이였습니다. 그게 다였죠.
그 후 30년 넘게 까맣게 잊고 있었다가, 지난 2010년에 충남 진산군 월명동에 정명석 목사가 만든 큰 자연성전이 있다는 소식을 들었습니다. 그 당시 르포 취재를 갔었죠. 47만평에 달하는, 어마어마한 규모의 자연 성전이었습니다. 월명동 자연교회 성전은 세계적인 자연교회 성전입니다.
기독교는 쇠퇴하는데 성전 내 젊은 성도들이 많은 점이 경이로웠고, 일반인들이 이해할 수 없는 이상한 행동이 연출되는 것도 못 봤습니다.
당시 르포에서 저는 이 교회의 미래는 보장되어있다는 결론을 내렸죠. 자연의 삼라만상 하나하나가 신의 창조물이니 숲속에 핀 야생화 한 송이에서도 진실한 하나님의 설교를 들을 수 있다는 것입니다.
월명동 자연성전은, 정명석 목사님의 시대에 앞선 커다란 구상이라고 생각합니다. 4500년 전에 만들어진 이집트 피라미드를 관광하려고 하는 세계인들이 줄을 서죠? 자연성전을 보기 위해서도 세계인들이 찾아오고 있는데 이거야말로 대한민국 국익 산업의 하나라고 봅니다.
3. 작가님도 신앙 있으세요?
▲저는 강남대학 신학과를 졸업했습니다. 기독교 문학을 전공했습니다. 일본의 기독교 사상가 우찌무라 간조의 무교회 사상에 심취됐었습니다. 하지만, 지금은 웃음종교 교주입니다. (하하하) 지난 2012년부터 웃음을 웃는 세계를 지향하는 ‘웃음종교 이론’을 창안해왔고, 책도 썼으며, 이 운동을 벌이고 있습니다. 그런데 아직까지 신도가 한 명도 없습니다. (하하하).

4. JMS 교인들이 대규모 시위에 대해선 어떻게 생각하세요?

또 아주 중요한 사실은, 정명석 목사님께서 월남전에 두 번이나 참전(전투병)했던 ‘참전 용사’라는 사실입니다. 지난 8월20일, 서울에서 있었던 한 집회에서 참전용사회 관계자가 정명석 목사님이 월남전에서 어떤 공적을 세워왔는지 증언하는 말을 들어봤습니다. 또 다른 서울 대규모 집회에선 월남전 참전 용사들이 정명석 전우의 공정 재판을 호소하겠다고 많이 오셨더라고요.
미국은 사지에서 돌아온 군인이 대통령이 되었을 정도로 예우가 좋습니다. 월남전 참전용사였다면 그만큼 불의의 올가미를 벗겨줘야 한다고 봅니다.
5. 이번에 정명석 목사 사건 보도를 모아 “나는 정명석을 만나러 간다”라는 제목의 책을 내셨는데, 베스트셀러로 진입한 것을 축하드립니다!
▲감사합니다. 언론의 가짜보도의 문제점을 적시한 제 글이 독자들의 주목을 받았습니다. 이는 저자인 제 개인에겐 기쁜 일이지만, 그만큼 한국 언론의 허접함을 드러낸 슬픈 사회 현상 중의 하나라고 생각합니다. 언론의 과장 보도가 사회적으로 얼마나 큰 폐해를 주는가를 추적했습니다.
6. 이 책을 발간한 이후, 왜 JMS를 두둔하느냐라는, 부정적인 피드백이나 협박이 들어오지는 않나요?
▲기자는 사실을 기록하는 사람입니다. 사실 기록이 우선이라고 보았습니다. 일단 여성 1만명 이상을 성폭행 했다는 보도는 전형적인 뻥 튀기식 언론보도는 근절되는 게 마땅합니다. 피해 여성 인적사항도 제대로 거명되지 않았어요.
그 동안 기자생활 하면서 협박이 들어온 적도 물론 있죠. 하지만 사실은 곧 진실이기에, 종국에는 사실이 승리합니다. 저와 같은 작가는 협박의 대상이 될 수 없습니다.

7. JMS같은 K-종교에 대해서 한 말씀 해주십시오.
▲우리나라는 불교, 가톨릭, 개신교 등을 해외에서 받아들여 종교 백화점 국가가 됐습니다. 가톨릭에 바쳐진 막대한 주일헌금이 해외로 유출되고 있습니다.
그렇다면, JMS같은 ‘K-종교’가 국제 사회로 수출되는 게, 나쁠 게 있을까요? 대한민국을 위해서 아주 좋은 일이지요. JMS는 외국인 신자의 수가 날로 늘고 있고, 월명동 자연성전을 보기 위해 많은 외국인들이 찾아오고 있습니다.
예수의 탄생지 이스라엘은 기독교의 성지입니다. 향후, 충청남도 금산이야말로. 기독교복음선교회를 창교한 정명석 목사님이 태어난 성지(聖地)가 될 게 분명합니다. 현재 JMS 내 모순과 비판점들이 정리가 된다면, 대한민국의 국가 부강에 기여하는 한국산 종교가 되리라고 예견합니다. 그 어느 사회이든지 수난을 극복하면, 밝은 세상이 열립니다. 모두의 승리를 위해, 열심히 기도하고, 노력합시다!

1. Why did you report positively on JMS, a religious group that has become a public issue?
▲In early March, a program called ‘I Am God’ was aired on ‘Netflix’, the so-called OTT journal. The content resonated greatly. After this program aired, shocking news reports poured in about Pastor Myung-Seok Jeong. Pastor Myeongseok Jeong was already arrested (unconvicted) in a semi-sexual assault case on October 28, 2022.
Talking about this incident, an anti-JMS activist made a broadcast appearance on OO Radio on March 14th. In relation to this, Ilbo A reported in a press article dated March 14th, "Professor K said in an interview with OO Radio's 'Issue and People' on the 14th that when the host asked about the number of victims, 'What Jung Myeong-seok usually said was, 'I will sexually save 10,000 people.' “My ultimate goal was to make her the lover of heaven,” he said. “In other words, he himself said that his goal was to sexually assault 10,000 people, and as a result of my observation of that person’s behavior, he was only devoted to sexual assault.” “Because he is the person who did it, I think he may have exceeded his goal,” the report said. The moment he heard this news in his 50th year as a reporter, the thought that ‘Jung Myung-seok may have fallen into a trap’ crossed his mind. My imagination as a reporter never left me. If this is true, it means that one man sexually assaulted 10,000 people, which is shocking.
The numbers are literally inflated enormously. From then on, I began to look into the truth of the reports about Pastor Jung Myeong-seok.
The reason why Pastor Myeongseok Jeong is in the current situation may be because he was closely controlled by vested religious forces. I think we may have been caught in a trap set by internal or breakaway forces.
Korean society is not so disorganized that tens of thousands of people are sexually assaulted by one person.

2. Have you known Pastor Myeongseok Jeong of JMS from the beginning?
▲It has been a very long time since I met Pastor Myeongseok Jeong in person. It was 1979, more than 40 years ago. A friend who worked at a print shop suggested we go together, so we went to a revival meeting in a small building. In the middle of a crowd of people, a young man was giving a lecture. That person was Pastor Myungseok Jeong. That was it for him.
After forgetting about it for over 30 years, I heard in 2010 that there was a large natural temple built by Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok in Wolmyeong-dong, Jinsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. At that time, I went to reportage. It was a natural temple of enormous size, covering an area of 470,000 pyeong. Wolmyeong-dong Natural Church Temple is a world-class natural church temple.
I was amazed that there were many young believers in the temple even though Christianity was in decline, and I did not see any strange behavior that the general public could not understand.
From the report at the time, I concluded that the future of this church was guaranteed. Since every single thing in nature is God's creation, we can hear God's true sermon even from a single wild flower blooming in the forest.
I believe that the Wolmyeong-dong Natural Temple is a great idea ahead of Pastor Myeong-seok Jeong's time. People from all over the world are lining up to tour the Egyptian pyramids built 4,500 years ago, right? People from all over the world come to see the natural temple, and I think this is one of Korea's national interest industries.
3. Do you also have faith?
▲I graduated from the Department of Theology at Kangnam University. He majored in Christian literature. I was fascinated by the non-church ideology of Japanese Christian thinker Kanzo Uchimura. However, he is now the leader of the Laughter Religion. (Hahaha) Since 2012, I have created the ‘Laughter Religion Theory’, which aims to create a world full of laughter, written a book, and have been carrying out this movement. However, there are still no believers. (ha ha ha).
4. What do you think about the large-scale protests by JMS church members?
▲The reason why members of the Christian Gospel Mission are staging off-site protests and collecting 1 million petition signatures is clear. I think this is a request to eliminate the damage caused by distorted and exaggerated reporting by some media outlets. This kind of movement is also a patriotic movement for the country. Fake news that a South Korean man sexually assaulted as many as 10,000 women was spread around the world. This is fake news that shames Koreans. This needs to be corrected.
Another very important fact is that Pastor Myeongseok Jeong is a ‘veteran’ who participated in the Vietnam War twice. On August 20th, at a rally held in Seoul, I heard a member of the veterans' society testify about the achievements that Pastor Myeongseok Jeong had made during the Vietnam War. At another large-scale rally in Seoul, many Vietnam War veterans came to appeal for a fair trial for comrade Jung Myung-seok.
The United States treats people so well that a soldier who returned from a deadly war became president. If he was a Vietnam War veteran, I think he should have been freed from the noose of injustice.
5. This time, you published a book titled “I am going to meet Jung Myung-seok,” which compiled reports on the case of Pastor Myung-seok Jeong. Congratulations on becoming a bestseller!
▲Thank you. My article, which pointed out the problems with the media's fake reports, attracted the attention of readers. Although this is a happy event for me as an author, I think it is one of the sad social phenomena that exposes the laxity of the Korean media. We tracked how much social harm the media's exaggerated reports cause.
6. Since publishing this book, have you received any negative feedback or threats asking why you support JMS?
▲A reporter is a person who records facts. In fact, I thought records came first. First of all, the report that more than 10,000 women were sexually assaulted should be eradicated as a typical nonsense media report. The victim's personal information was also not properly named.
Of course, I have received threats while working as a reporter. But facts are truth, and in the end, facts win. Writers like me cannot be subject to intimidation.
7. Please tell us a little about K-religions like JMS.
▲Korea accepted Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism from overseas and became a religious department store country. A huge amount of Sunday offerings given to Catholics are being leaked overseas.
So, is there anything bad about ‘K-religion’ like JMS being exported to the international community? This is a very good thing for Korea. The number of foreign believers at JMS is increasing day by day, and many foreigners are coming to see the Wolmyeong-dong Natural Temple.
Israel, the birthplace of Jesus, is a holy place for Christianity. In the future, Geumsan, Chungcheongnam-do. It is certain that it will be the sacred place where Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok, who founded the Christian Gospel Mission, was born. If the current contradictions and criticisms within JMS are sorted out, I predict that it will become a Korean religion that contributes to the prosperity of the Republic of Korea. In any society, if hardships are overcome, a brighter world opens up. Let’s pray hard and work hard for everyone’s victory!
