현대사회에 이르러
말들이 거칠고 빠르고 탁하다.
특히 정치에서 흘러나온 온갖 독설들,
말은 그렇게 수 백 년을 퇴화해왔다.
정치인들은
국가를 운영하는 자들이기에
그들의 뱉어낸 말은 기록되고
회자되고 공명되며 널리 퍼진다.
최근에는 언론의 글조차도
가볍고 선정적이며 바르지 못하여
기댈 곳이 없어 아프다.
그들이 만들어낸
광기어린 말과 글이
나라의 품격이 되기에
더욱 마음이 아프다.
교수, 언론인, 법조인, 전문인,
최고학부의 인재들,
정부요직을 두루 거치고 국정을
이끌어가는 장차관들이나,
민의를 대변한다고
나선 선출직 정치인들...
물론 극히 일부이겠지만
언론에 노출되어 나오는 그들의
언어의 경박함과 독한 말들이 난무하는
정치판을 보면 가슴이 답답해진다.

말은 공간을 점유한
공기 중 파동을 일으켜
잠시 머물다 사라진다.
동의보감에 이르기를
심은 성음의 주인이고
폐는 성음의 문이며
신은 성음의 뿌리이다.
신장에서 끌어 올려
폐에서 공명하고 성대를
통하여 말을 하게 되는 것이다.
이렇게 주요장기가
함께하여야 소리가 나오는 것이다.
그래서 눈에 보이지도 않고
공간을 점유하지도 않는 소리를
신과 영혼과 같이 신비롭다고도 한다.
옛 어른들은

말조심해야 한다고,
말을 무겁게 가르쳤다.
무심코 뱉은 말들이 우주공간에
영원히 머무르고 있다고도 한다.
그래서 옛 선조들의 말은
진중하고 천금처럼 무거웠으며
풍류로 즐기는 시조나 소리조차
낮고 느리게 자연을 거스르지 않고

청문회나 국정조사를 보면

존재의 가벼움은 어찌할까?
새해의 바램은
그동안 격동기 마다
우리 민족을 올바르게 이끌어왔던
정치인, 지식인, 언론인, 종교인 등
오피니언 리더들이
존경받지 못할지언정
일반 대중으로부터
권력과 돈만 쫓는 하찮은 존재로
각인되어 신뢰를 잃는 일이 없었으면 싶다.
그들의 천박함은 민족의
앞길마저 암울하게 만드는 일이다.
거칠지만 올 곧고 강직하고
논리에 깊이가 있고 문장은 유려하고
대화는 가볍고 천박하지 않으며
그러한 말들로 채워지는 세상을 보고 싶다.
이번 총선에는 그런 사람들이
많이 당선 되었으면 하는 마음이 가득하다.

문득,
대전광역시장을 지낸 분 중에
경청을 모든 덕목에 가장 으뜸으로
여겨 모든 계층의 다양한 이야기들을
끊임없이 들으려 노력했었던, 작지만
거인이라고 칭송받던 분이 기억난다.
늘 대중과 함께하고 소통하려고

중앙부처를 두루 거쳐 시장이 되었지만
친근한 이웃집 형 같았던 그를 보고
공직자들은 “참 선비 같은 분이구나.”라고
이구동성으로 칭송했었다.
결국 말의 품격이
인격의 평가로 나타나는 것이다.
무릇 정치인이라면 최소한 그 정도
말의 품격을 지녀야 지역민의 총의를
