우리 민족은 뼈 속 깊이 아픈 역사가 새겨져있어
일본과는 화해할 수 있어도 청산하지 못한 친일파와
그 후손은 용서를 하기 어렵다. 공생하기 때문이다.
일장기를, 욱일기를 아파트에 내걸고 차량에 달고 다니는
현실은 부와 권력을 축적한 친일파와 공간에 숨 쉬고 있다는
것만으로도 견딜 수 없는 공분을 느끼게 된다.

이탈리아 미술사에서 어둠의 방식이라고 불리는
테네브리즘Tenebrism은 어둠에서 어둠을 창조하여
빛을 극명하게 보여주는 기법으로 카라바조의 작품에서
극명하게 느낄 수 있다.
짙은 어둠속에서 한줄기 빛은
안도와 희망, 성스러움까지도 느끼게 해준다.

우리 사회도 선과 악의 기준을 명쾌하게 구분하였고
짙은 어둠의 악에서 선을 극명하게 대비하여
가정에서, 학교에서, 동네에서, 말과 행동으로
때론 유교적 가치관, 종교적 덕목으로 가르치고 실천하였다.
사회지도층인사들도 선함이
더 드러나는 행동으로 수범적인 삶의 태도를 보여
아이들이 보고 배우고 따르고자 하였다.
의사들은 히포크라데스 정신을 가슴에 늘 담고 있었고
신중하고 올 곳은 의술을 펼침에 수많은 미담들이
늘 함께 공존하였고 따뜻한 덕을 베풀었다.
법조인들은 긍지와 자부심을 가지고

재판의 공정성을 지키며 존경을 받았다.

아직 희망이 있는 것은 그들이 중심을 잡고 떳떳하게

쉽게 박수를 보낼 수 없다.

그림에서 예수와 빌라도가 마주보고 서있다.
한사람에게는 밝고 화사한 빛이, 다른 한사람에게는
그늘과 어둠만이 존재한다.
살찐 빌라도가 앙상하게 야윈 예수에게

선과 악을 극명하게 대비하였다.
그런데 진리의 선인 예수는 어둠에 묵묵히 서있고
비단옷을 입고 살찐 빌라도는 환한 빛을 등에 입고
진리를 심판하려한다.
지금 시대의 모습이 투영되어지는 듯하다
선과 악이 명확하게 구분되어지고 선이 사회의 많은
부분에 점하고 있을 때는 악은 선명하게 드러나는데,
점점 부정부패가 만연하고 물질만능주의가 사회를
가득 뒤덮은 세상에서는 악은 그저 보편적 사회현상으로
드러나지 않고 선은 고독하고 힘들고 어려운 시대가 되어 진 것 같다.
조선인들에게 극악했던 친일파가 해방되고 나서도
검찰, 경찰, 군, 행정, 정치 모든 요직을 차지하고
부와 권력을 대대손손 지금까지 누리는데 독립운동으로
모든 것을 잃은 애국지사 후손들은 해방된 조국에서도
여전히 핍박 받는 그림을 보는듯한 우울함이 느껴진다.
이제 망설임없이 일장기와 욱일기를 거리낌 없이 내미는
그들의 모습에서 빛을 받고 서 예수를 핍박하는 살찐
본디오 빌라도의 모습을 연상케 한다.

‘배반자 가롯 유다’ 그림에서 이렇게 말한다.

시대에 따라 어둠과 빛이 다르게 닿는다.
최근에 버닝썬 사건이 다시 씁쓸하게 오르내리고 있다.

부패에 대한 성찰과 고민이 있어 그림으로 표현하였을 것이다.
지금의 시대에는 많은 악들이 선으로 포장되어지고
악에 대한 거리낌 없는 행동에도 큰 비난을 받지 않아도
되는 시대일지도 모른다.
예전에는 살인사건이 벌어지면 모든 언론이 앞 다투어
보도하고 분석하고 논평하고 사회적 반성을 요구하는
분위기가 조성되었는데, 지금은 아무도 관심이 없고
지독히 잔혹해야만 반응하는 그런 시대가 되었다.
‘진리를 말하는 예수 그리스도는 어둠에 갇혀
신음하는 민중, 선하고 도덕적인 진리를 추구하는 자를
대변하고 극단적 이기심으로 자신의 안위에만 급급한
기득권층을 빌라도로 표현했다’고 한다.
지금 비춰지는 역설적인 빛의 방향에
수없이 많은 권력과 부를 누리고 살아온
기득권층이 아무런 반성도 없이 그들에게
쏟아지는 빛에 환호하며 그 행위들을 반복하며
악을 자행하며 살아가고 있는 것은 아닐까?

우리가 잃어버린 닳고 무뎌진 양심,
예수께서 말하신 진리란 무엇인가?
무뎌진 양심을 끊임없이 갈고 정진하며
그 아픔의 근원이 무엇인지 되찾아야 한다.
