사단법인 대한웅변인협회(회장 정덕권)는 6월18일 보도자료에서 “사단법인 대한웅변인협회가 국가보훈부 서울지방보훈청과 공동으로 오는 8월 24일 오후 1시 독립기념관에서 광복79주년 기념·통일염원 ‘제36회 독립선열정신선양 국민통합 전국웅변스피치대회’를 개최한다”고 알렸다.
사단법인 대한웅변인협회는 1949년 10월 20일 독립투사 이기남 선생께서 민족정기의 회복과 국민정신계도 목적으로 설립한 한국 최초의 웅변 단체이다. 설립 이후 75년의 역사와 함께 많은 지도자를 배출했다.

참가대상은 대회목적에 찬동해 희망하는 전국 초·중·고·대학생 및 일반 해외동포 등이다. 웅변발표 시간은 초등부는 4분, 중·고등부는 5분, 대학·일반부는 6분. 시상으로는 대통령상, 삼부요인상, 관계부처 장관상 등이 예정되어 있다. 후원은 교육부, 통일부, 국가보훈부, 서울시, 서울시의회 등의 정부기관 및 지자체가 참여한다.
